Day Games Played During The Thirties
The game was called "Peggy". To play this game
all that was needed was a broom stick. Two or more pieces were cut from the
broomstick. One end was then pared to a point. A 21/2 ‘ to 3’ foot piece
would be cut from the stick and would be used as a bat. The small pointed piece
would be placed on the ground and using the long stick, you would tap the
pointed end of the peg. This would then fly up and then you would strike the peg
with the bat toward the front of a house.
The game was played using baseball rules and single,
double, triple, and home run rules would apply. The single designation would be
about twenty feet from the batters box. Doubles would be another 20 feet and
also the triples, and homers. Four or more players were needed. Half would be
the batters and the other half would be the fielders. When the batter hit the
peg and it flew in the air, the fielders would try to catch the peg.
We used baseball gloves because this peg would be very
fast and would hurt your hand. If the peg was caught in the air, the batter
would be out. After three outs the players would switch fields.
