DONAUSCHWABEN SOCCER TOURNAMENT

35th Anniversary of Tournament

Forwarded by Michael Talan

Landessportsleiter

As the warmer weather begins to make a strong hold in our wonderful State of Michigan and the grass begins to turn a luscious green color and the trees start to drive their spring new life behind our wonderful Club-House, we at Carpathia can start to get excited about another upcoming soccer season at the Club. This year the Carpathia Club will be hosting the very prestigious U.S. National Donauschwaben Soccer Tournament. Also, the Tournament will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary, which started back in 1975 in Akron, Ohio.

Memories of this great event will never be forgotten regardless if you have been a player, coach, manager, or spectator. Over the years the competition of the games and the friendships that have been made and cherished are truly irreplaceable. From absolutely wonderful warm weather to blustery cold weekends, the teams and clubs continue to show their commitment to this Tournament, making it one of the oldest and most successful tournaments in the United States of America.

Many championships have been awarded to various Clubs within the Society of Danube Swabians in the USA. Fans will remember championship matches for many years for the high level of skill and competition. Players, coaches, and fans throughout the years have shed many tears of joy and sorrow at this event, all for one love and passion of the sport of Soccer/Fussball.

As a Junior, Major, and Old Timers player in this tournament and now as National Sports Director/Landessportleiter der Donauschwaben USA, I can only say how truly proud I am of our Society of Danube Swabians and the soccer Teams and Clubs for their unending support and commitment they have given to this great Tournament and tradition. Without them and their commitment this Tournament would have ended years ago.

On May 23rd and 24th I ask you to “please” mark your calendars and attend both days of great soccer and camaraderie at our Carpathia Club. Tell your friends and family to join us for two fun filled days of great soccer and great atmosphere at the Carpathia Club. Many of us have traveled for many years with our Carpathia Kickers and cheered them to victory. Now it is your chance to do this at our own Club. Lets us ALL come out in huge numbers and show Carpathia hospitality and welcome all our guests from all over the United States and Canada.

Hope to see you all there on May 23rd and 24th at the Carpathia Club, and thank you so much for your support!!!!

Yours in Sport,

FIRST TEAM - FEBRUARY RECAP

On February 1, 2009, the GW 1st Team took to the pitch again table toppers, Schwaben AC, for what would prove to be a grim afternoon for the green team. Injuries, illnesses and perhaps a few Super Bowl parties left Green White with a depleted side, while Schwaben ran out with a full compliment. Almost from the start, Green White found themselves pinned in the West end, as shot after shot reverberated off the glass. Indeed, the assault was so fast and so sustained that before the echoes of the last shot faded, another was being unleashed. Yet, Green White bunkered down with Jake Truty, Jamie Limna, Colum Donahue and Anthony Derose forming a band of brothers in support of the targeted Dan Caruso in net. To their credit, Green White survived the siege with the score tied at zero going into the intermission.

But the second half was a different story. Schwaben opened the scoring off a restart at the top of the box that was slid right and riffled through traffic. With the outcome still in the balance, Green White was given a reprieve at the 16:30 mark when Schwaben was caught with too many players on the field. However, Green White could only muster three shots from the resultant power play. To compound the situation, with just seconds remaining on the man-advantage, Caruso was forced to come out of the box to challenge a loose ball. As Caruso and the Schwaben forward converged, the ball rebounded in favor of blue team and was easily slipped into the vacated net. The best and perhaps only real chance on the afternoon for Green White occurred when Nick Kowalski forced an errant pass that fell to an unmarked Andy Pancio at the top of the box. But the well struck effort was directed right into the arms of the opposing net-minder. Schwaben added a third on a cheeky back heel and then finished the job with two more. The only solace taken from the match was that the league website initially reported the score incorrectly; temporarily and wishfully elevating Green White to third place.

Squad: Dan Caruso (k), Brendan Connor, Tom

Czop, Anthony Derose, Colum Donahue, Jamie

Limna, Nick Kowalski, Andy Pancio, Eric Spiess,

Jake Stasko, Jake Truty and Mike Waters.

    In other Metropolitan League action on February 1, 2009: Eagles 0 - Kickers 1; Belgrade 2 - Zrinski 4; Sockers 2 - Polonia 1; United Serbs 4 - Vikings 3.

February 8, 2009 was derby day at the Odeum in Villa Park, Illinois and that meant Chicago Kickers were on the slate for Green White. However, the cherubic Kickers against an aging Green White side resembled something more like a father-son match than a Metropolitan League derby. Indeed, the youngsters set GW on their heels in the opening minutes of the match as the elder side creaked into gear. But Green White used a guile and wisdom that comes with age, taking advantage of a full bench, keeping their shifts short to match the energy of their youthful opponents. With this strategy, it did not take long for GW to find their groove and opened the scoring through Nick Kowalski, who scuffed his first effort, but collected the rebound and did much better with a second attempt from the right corner. The lead did not last long; however, as Kickers struck back with a goal off a restart at the top of the key that took a deflection through traffic. Kickers then took the lead at the 4:30 mark on a 3-1 break as the Green White defense left Caruso to his own devices. Following the intermission, Green White equalized on a restart from the corner by Sean Connor who waited for Andy Pancio to lull the defense and then sneak into an open space at the back stick. Seizing the momentum, the green team then took the lead on another Connor corner kick, this time poked in on the stretch by Jake Stasko. Green White doubled the lead when Kowalski carried through midfield, and then (depending upon who you talk to) either mishit his shot (again) or intentionally played it to himself, collected the rebound and struck for his brace. Kickers pulled one back near the end to make for a nervy finish, but Green White held on to secure their third victory on the season, evening their record at 3-3-0.

On February 15, 2009, the Green White First Team took on league leading Sockers who had posted a perfect 6-0 record to date in the 2009 Metropolitan Indoor League campaign. Fielding the youngest squad in the league, the Sockers had beaten all comers with a combination of relentless pressure, pace and skill. As expected, the game started at a frenetic pace with both teams trading attacking forays. At about the eight minute mark, GW made the breakthrough when the opportunistic Andy Pancio tucked in a rebound from close distance. The goal marked only the second time all season that Sockers had found themselves behind in a match, and they apparently did not like the feeling because they responded almost immediately; leveling the game on a somewhat tame shot from the left side that managed to evade a number of players in front of the goal and past an unsighted Paul Vignocchi. The two team continued trading attacks with the Sockers beginning to find the upper hand. However; it was Green White who had the next best chance to break the deadlock with Andy Pancio feeling déjà vu as he nearly duplicated the opening goal. But with the Sockers’ keeper scrambling, it took a last ditch tackle from a Sockers’ defender to deny Pancio the golden apple. Buoyed by the escape, Sockers took charge of the game, bagging three goals in the last eight minutes of the half to take a 4-1 lead into the intermission. While Sockers at times can be an irresistible force, Green White were left to rue some sloppy defending. At least two of the goals could have been avoided. The second half proved an even affair. Yet, despite a vigorous effort, Green White could not drag themselves back into the game. In the end, Sockers added to their lead and scored the only goal of the second half on a power play after GW was penalized for having too many players on the field. Reporting contributions from Jamie Limna.

    In other Metropolitan League action on February 15, 2009: Kickers 1 - Polonia 2; Eagles 0 - Vikings 3; Belgrade 4 - Schwaben 2; Zrinski 2 - United Serbs 4.

On February 22, 2009, in the penultimate game of the season, a shortsided Green White First Team took on bottom feeding Belgrade. With a shortage of players on hand, the squad re-activated veteran Jon Duddles to mind the net and he quickly proved his mettle, coming up big with a finger-tip swat to keep the ball out of the upper right corner and then sitting on the rebound to deny any thought of a second effort. At the other end, it took some time for the green team to warm up, but with just under five minutes remaining in the first half, like Peter Frampton in 1976, Green White came alive. At the 4:50 mark, Jamie Limna played a long diagonal pass out of the back to Eric Spiess on the left of goal where Spiess bodied off his defender to lay the ball onto the path of Andy Pancio, but Pancio’s effort just missed the lower right corner. Moments later, Spiess dished again, this time finding Mike Waters at the top of the box. Waters’ strike hit the same mark tattooed by Pancio, but this time the age-less Jake Truty, fresh from a tea-party in Indianapolis to celebrate the coming nuptials of Chris Ryan, was there to bang through the five-hole for the opening tally. Green White carried their good form into the second period. Gritty defense from Colum Donahue resulted in spilt milk as he stripped the ball in midfield and fed Arso Mitreski to collect the spoils with powerful blast. Literally seconds later, Green White extended their lead to 3-0 with an exchange across the face of goal from Truty to Brendan Connor to Pancio. After Belgrade pulled one back, Green White reestablished the three goal cushion when Spiess evaded a tackle to break in on goal and find Tom Czop for the first timer into the corner. With just five minutes remaining and a commanding 4-1 lead, the game appeared done and dusted, but that would have been too easy. As club president Hans Metzinger nervously paced the halls, Belgrade clawed back; cutting the deficit in half and then down to one on a controversial call that resulted when Anthony Derose was guilty of a three-line clearance. The ball was brought back to the top of the arc for the restart. The Belgrade forward attempted to play into his posting teammate, but Derose flattened the would be recipient to see the ball evade everyone and bounce off the end-board untouched. Before anyone else could react, the player who took the restart ran on to collect his own rebound and sneak it past Duddles. Clearly the goal should have been disallowed for an illegal touch, but the protests fell upon deaf ears. However, the debate and arguments after the goal were successful in running off precious seconds from the clock. Still, with Green White clinging to a one goal lead and less than a minute to play, all looked lost when a foolish play in midfield gave away possession for a 3-1 break. But Duddles was once again up to the task, saving the grace of his teammates by smothering a pass to thwart the last ditch chance and earning himself man of the match honors. With the victory, Green White rose to a tie for third place on points with Schwaben AC; poised for a second place finish should they succeed in closing out Polonia in the final match of the season.

OVER 30 TEAM - FEBRUARY RECAP

Have you ever heard the story about the boy who cried wolf? Jim Dionne hasn’t. Hours before an exceedingly late (11:00 p.m.) kickoff on February 5, 2009 against Lightning, Dionne spread the word that the Over 30 Team was in dire straits for numbers. The plea was so compelling that even the aged Todd Schneider, who refuses to play games past his bed time, took an early evening nap to help spell the side. To his consternation, Schneider arrived for the match to find a calvary of players for three full lines, something that never occurs in the alte herren leagues. Hearing Dionne’s pleas, Mitch Lechowski brought his buddy Rustin Leathers (seriously, that’s his name); Tim Verbeten came out for a run; Cesar Uribe shook off a week-old tongue lashing from Angry Todd; John Sedej emerged from an 18 month hibernation; John Dunkas taped up every articulating joint in his body; Greg Boltz enlisted his wife Linda as a ringer (although she did not suit up); and even a scotch-soaked Keith Andersson showed up after a corporate event with his wife Stacey, who was sporting these smoking hot, black boots and . . . um . . . well, I digress. As for the game itself, with the superior numbers, the result was never really in doubt. Mitch Lechowski paced the side with three (3) goals; Dionne and Schneider added one apiece. The moral of the story is that the next time Dionne whines about a lack of players, he’ll get a book of fables to the back of the head.

Squad: Joel Meadow (k), Greg Boltz, Jim Dionne,

John Dunkas, Eugene Kim, Mitch Lechowski,

Rustin Leathers, Mike Reinhardt, Russell

Rosenberg, Todd Schneider, John Sedej, Cesar

Uribe, Axel Vega, Tim Verbetin, Scott Walz.

(Goals: M.Lechowski 3, Jim Dionne 1, Todd

Schneider 1).

In other Libertyville Over 30 League action on February 5, 2009: E.S.S.C. 0 - Chicago Kickers 3 forfeit (Kickers actually lost 4-3 but protested after the game that Diego Gutierrez was not on the Eclipse official roster - even though he’d been playing with them for several weeks); Midnight Warriors 2 - Polonia 5.

The GWO30 Team returned to action on February 12, 2009 against league whipping boys, Midnight Warriors. From the outset, it was apparent that the green team would not be troubled by their Latino opponents. However, the opening goal went against our heroes and despite their omnipresence, GW could only muster an equalizer through Chris Wellman before the intermission. But the second half was a different story as Green White moved the ball with ease past the wilting Warriors. Of note, Eugene Kim finally broke his duck tapping in from a foot away; Jim Dionne hit a dipping rocket from 15 yards that the fell off the table and under the sprawling keeper; and Joel Meadow unilaterally expanded the goal box, sprawling to collect the ball a good 3 feet outside the box (with no call). However, the “Maxwell Smart - Missed It By That Much Award” went to Chris Wellman; tanned, refreshed and relaxed from a week-long vacation in Mexico, for his attempted nut-meg on a pumpkin sized defender as the game clock wore down. For the record, El Gordito won that battle.

Squad: Joel Meadow (k), Keith Andersson, Greg

Boltz, Jim Dionne, Eugene Kim, Mitch

Lechowski, Mike Reinhardt, Todd Schneider, Jason

    In other Libertyville Over 30 League action on February 12, 2009: Lightning 3 - Chicago Kickers 8; Chicago Kickers 9 - Polonia 3; Lost Cause 8 - E.S.S.C. 3.

On February 19, 2009 the Green White Over 30 Team met emerging nemesis Lost Cause for a late night match in Libertyville, Illinois. The match started poorly for a sluggish green side as they spotted their opponents to a 3-0 lead. Frustrations began to mount, but the team contained their composure, ultimately pulling back a goal before the end of the half when Mike Reinhardt tucked one into the right corner on the break. Still, it took a sprawling Joel Meadow to keep the scoreline, as he scrambled to swat one off the line that had initially eluded him. Green White settled down in the second half to find their form while Lost Cause was content to sit back and defend. At the 12 minute mark, Chris Wellman cut the deficit to one, cleaning up a rebound. The team nearly equalized with five minutes remaining, but Greg Boltz put a sitter over the top from two paces out. As Green White pushed, Lost Cause capitalized on a 2-1 break, nearly thwarted by Todd Schneider, but the intercepted ball took an unfavorable bounce to an onrushing forward who slotted the keeper to seal the game. Not lost in the heat of the battle was an attempted header from Keith Andersson that resembled something like the maiden voyage of the Spruce Goose. As the ball began to fall, so too did Andersson. By the time he made contact, Andersson was nearly prone with the ball under his belly, as he sipped upon polyester turf and rubber pellets. Nice work, Baby Huey. With the loss, Green White fell out of the title race, and will play E.S.S.C. in the consolation final in a fort night.

Squad: Joel Meadow (k), Keith Andersson, Greg Boltz, Jim Dionne,

    In other Libertyville Over 30 League action on February 19, 2009: Chicago Kickers 2 - E.S.S.C. 4; Polonia 6 - Lightning 12.

What manner of insanity would cause someone to schedule a game at 1l:45 p.m. on a school night? That unfortunate circumstance befell the Green White Over 30 team when they kicked off on February 26, 2009 against Chicago Kickers in a game that concluded the following day. After the rest of Chicagoland had long retired for the evening, the dedicated (or daft) crew scraped themselves together for the game, while Kickers arrived with a full compliment for the battle. The details of the match were sparse because most were sleep walking through the game anyway. It was recalled that Kickers were first to get on the board, but a brace from Mike Reinhardt saw Green White take the lead. Indeed, the diminutive one reportedly caused havoc in the offensive third all game long. At the other end, keeper Joel Meadow kept the team in the game with several outstanding saves. But with the game reaching its conclusion and the score knotted at two a piece, Jim Dionne wanted to hit the snooze button but instead misplayed a ball in the back, allowing the opposition to walk in alone to slot the game winner, handing Green White their second loss on the bounce. To compound the disappointment of losing to a rival club, it was later learned that due to other results in the league, a win would have seen Green White through to the final. However, with the loss GW will face E.S.S.C. in the consolation final. Reporting contributions from Jim Dionne.

OVER 40 TEAM - FEBRUARY RECAP

On February 6, 2009, the GWO40 squad faced off against a Vikings N Lions team that featured the always dangerous Richie Tilford. Unfortunately for Tilford, that’s all VNL had as Green White ran all over them. David Breines had a break out game with a hat-trick, including a deft little volley served in by Eric Gottung in front of net. Doug Adams continued his good form while Gottung, Cliff Sellie, John Dunkas and a limping Todd Schneider patrolled the back. Dave Nichols and Dunkas also tripped the light, but the strike of the night belonged to Jusef Muratovic who thundered home a chance from 15 yards that never rose more than a foot off the carpet. With the victory, Green White improved their chances of a top two finish and a spot in the finals.

Squad: Art Caliskan (k), Doug Adams, David Breines, John

Dunkas, Eric Gottung, Jusef Muratovic, Dave Nichols, Todd

Schneider, Cliff Sellie, Jason Thodos. (Goals: D.Breines 3,

D.Adams 2, J.Dunkas 1, J.Muratovic 1, D.Nichols 1).

    In other Libertyville Over 40 Indoor League action on February 13, 2009: Deerfield 2 - Libertyville Red 2; Emil’s FC 5 - Libertyville White 3; Chicago Kickers 6 - Gurnee Vikings 2.

On February 13, 2009, the Over 40 Team renewed acquaintances with familiar nemesis Libertyville White. In the last two meetings, Libertyville White dominated the Green White old-timers, but this game was a different story. Green White raced out to an early lead and never looked back. Doug Adams continued his good form and Mike Reinhardt found his shooting boots to make a late charge up the GW scoring charts. The score line could have been bigger, but too often the open man was bypassed in favor of a selfish attempt at goal. With the victory, the Green White Over 40 Team improved their record to 3-2.

Squad: Art Caliskan (k), Doug Adams, David Breines, Jusef Muratovic,

Mike Reinhardt, Todd Schneider, Cliff Sellie and Jeff

Wellman. (Goals: D.Adams 3, M.Reinhardt 2, D.Breines 1,

J.Wellman 1).

On February 20, 2009, the Green White Over 40 Team laced up for what they thought would be an easy game against Libertyville Red. But the scouting report must have had a few typo’s because it was not long before Green White had spotted their opponents a three goal lead. Of note, Mike Lucarelli looked more like a buffoon than Italian goalkeeping great, Gianluigi Buffon, allowed a knuckling goal from 35 yards. Holding the lead and pitching a shut-out into the second half, Libertyville were content to just sit back and defend, while tired legs on a short sided green side tried to muster some offense. Ultimate, GW cut the lead to one with David Breines lighting the lamp twice. But the energy expended in getting the game close took everything out of the home team and they had to settle for a loss against one of the lesser teams in the league.

Squad: Mike Lucarelli (k), Doug Adams, David

Breines, Art Caliskan, Tom OConnell, Todd

Schneider, Cliff Sellie and Chris Wellman. (Goals:

D.Breines 2).

PRESIDENT’S CUP RECAP

On February 14-15, 2009, Greg Boltz, Rob Czop, Tom Czop, John Dunkas, Pat Nash, David Nichols, Todd Schneider, Gabby Sepiashvili, Paul Weaver and Chris Wixson, all took a Valentine’s Day hit on the home front as they traveled to Madison, Wisconsin representing Green White in the 16th Annual Madison United President’s Cup. From the start, the weekend looked ominous for the traveling squad, as they made the trip two players short of a full team; knowing they would lose one player on day two of the tournament; and deciding to forsake the Over 38 Division in favor of the Over 30 Division, despite the fact that most of the team was born during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.
