wrong with this picture?
If you look closely at the picture above,
you will note that all the Marines pictured are bowing their heads. That's
because they're praying.
This incident took place at a
recent ceremony honoring the birthday of the corps, and it has the ACLU up in
arms. "These are federal employees," says Lucius Traveler, a spokesman
for the ACLU , "on federal property and on federal time. For them to pray
is clearly an establishment of religion, and we must nip this in the bud
immediately." May

I bought a bird

2009 CONFISCATED PROPERTY COMPENSATION IN CROATIA Forwarded by Elisabeth Miehle
Hello
Danube Swabian Members
Most likely you are aware that the Parliament in Croatia was in the process of
implementing a compensation law for restitution of the Danube Swabian
confiscated property, but no motion was done since 1996. More about the law you
can read below in German and in Croatian. http://www.bmeia.gv.at/aussenministerium/buergerservice/vermoegensfragen/kroatien/kroatien.html
The Landsmannschaften der Donauschwaben in Germany and Austria needs urgently our
help by putting pressure onto the Croatian Parliament to put that law into
effect. They intend to go to the EU Parliament to ask that Croatia will be
prevented of joining EU until they implement this compensation law.
We are honour bound to help our fellow Danube Swabians with sending petitions
individually or through our Danube Swabian organizations to the Croatian Embassy
in Washington.
Collectively we will succeed! Best
regards, Rosina
T. Schmidt

Fix for American Economy Submitted By Sgt. James S. Thornton This is from an article in the St. Petersburg Times newspaper. A writer in the business section asked readers for ideas on "How Would You Fix the Economy?" I
think this guy nailed it!
Dear Mr. President:
Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.
You
can call it the Patriotic Retirement
Plan: There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:
It can't get any easier than that! If
more money is needed, then have all members of your cabinet, members of
Congress, and their constituents pay their taxes...

Re: New Book/CD - A Collection of Genealogical Information of Palankaer-Americans 1895-2008
Dear Fellow Donauschwaben Researcher/Library, Greetings! I recently completed over 25 years of research and collecting of American genealogical records (obituaries, ship passenger lists, WWI/WWII draft registrations, residential directories, etc.) of Donauschwaben (German-Hungarians) from Backa Palanka, Batschka, Austra--Hungary/Yugoslavia/Serbia. Some of the records go back to 1895. These documents have been abstracted and transcribed, making them very easy to read. They appear together with a written history of Backa Palanka and the Trenton, New Jersey area (home of many Palankaer-Americans). The work is published in both book and CD formats. Please consider sharing this letter of introduction with your members, especially those with Palanka roots. The history of Palanka is similar to many other Donauschwaben towns so others may find the publication of interest too. It would be a great addition to your resource library. For your convenience, an order form is enclosed. I would be grateful if you would reproduce it for distribution to any local libraries/genealogical societies in your area. Copies of this work are already in the AKdFF library in Germany (a genealogical research center) and the LDS (Mormon) Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. The publication is meant to be an resource to Donauschwaben researchers here in the United States and around the world. At the same time, the work is intended to help document the struggles of our ancestors in the Balkans and how they were successful in carving out a new life here in America.
Sincerely,
Dennis J. Bauer. M.S., A.P.G. V.P./Genealogist, Trenton Donauschwaben 49 Conifer Road, Levittown, PA 19057-1718

History of DANK Deutsch Amerikanisher National Kongress
This information was taken from the information page on the DANK website. Visit its site for further information.
The German American National Congress (DANK) was founded in Chicago in 1959 to bring together Germans and Americans of German ancestry. We aim to preserve and enjoy our German heritage, language and culture. We are not a political organization, however we endeavor to represent German - American interests.
DANK maintains close relationships with our governmental and civic bodies, including the White House, federal, state and municipal agencies, as well as the German Embassy in Washington, consulates and other German organizations with cultural, education and commercial agendas. In 1987 DANK was instrumental in the adoption of the Congressional resolutions declaring October 6th German American Day, which has been observed since then on a national level.
Together with the Steuben Society of America and the United German American Committee of the U.S.A., the German American Joint Action Committee (GAJAC) was formed to promote this historic event. Leaders of the German American National Congress have been frequently invited to the White House by US presidents, as well as to functions by high ranking German government officials.
The German American National Congress publishes a bi-monthly bilingual newspaper, the German American Journal, with news and activity reports for its members and friends. It is the voice of the organization and has a national distribution.
Objectives & Activities
DANK also interacts with other ethnic societies in joint cultural programs.
As the nation's largest German American organization it has become a uniting force for our country's largest ethnic community and a strong voice in representing its interests

VISITING AUTHOR/EDITOR ARTICLE APRIL 2009 THOMAS JEFFERSON QUOTATIONS Forwarded by Magdalena Metzger
John Kennedy once said to an assembled group of scholars in the White House, "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." These quotes below could prove his point... When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe Thomas Jefferson
It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world. Thomas Jefferson I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Very Interesting Quote: In light of the present financial crisis, it's interesting to read what Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:
Doesn't this sound eerily familiar to what is happening in America today?
