This is the eighth year that the Society of the
Danube Swabians, 625 Seegers Road, Des Plaines, has sent car
loads of donations to the Self Help Closet & Pantry of
Des Plaines. On
December 9, at their annual Christmas party, the Society
welcomed Debra Walusiak, Executive Director of the Self Help
Closet & Pantry.
President Eckhard Blaumueller of the Society of the
Danube Swabians presented Walusiak with a donation of
$3,500.Five
hundred dollars of that amount was the proceeds of a
November rummage sale held by the Woman’s Auxiliary of the
Society to specifically raise funds for the Self Help Closet
& Pantry.
In addition to the monetary donation given to the
Food Pantry, each child and teen from the Society's children
and youth folkdance groups brought non-perishable food
items, gift cards, and children’s books for families who
are experiencing a time of need this holiday season.
Close to 500 items of non-perishable food was
collected at the Christmas party, along with $1,200 worth of
gift cards, and 48 children’s books.Many of the gift cards and books were selected by the
children themselves to give to boys and girls their own age
who may not otherwise receive a gift this holiday season.
The Society’s Board of Directors is very proud of
its youth, because they have once again shared with families
in their community who show a demonstrable need.Although the Christmas season brings in the greatest
quantities of food items, the Society of the Danube Swabians
collects non-perishable food all year long for the Self Help
Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines.Large red bins are set out in the Society’s
vestibule to accept donations from members. The
donations are transported to the Food Pantry on a regular
basis by Society volunteers.
The Society of the Danube Swabians is principally
organized for charitable purposes. Being that the founding
members of the Society were poor German immigrants who had been given an opportunity
to come to the United States for a better life, it became
the mission of the Society to provide supervised program
activities for the children, youth, and senior citizens of
the community, as well as reaching out to the community at
large.
Children from the ages of 3 to 13 can become members
of the children's folkdance group; young adults from 13
until 22 are able to join the youth folkdance group.
More information about The Society of the Danube
Swabians, or its upcoming events, can be found on their

Observations
on Growing
Older
~Your
kids are
becoming
you...and
you don't
like
them...but
your
grandchildren
are
perfect!
~Going out
is good..
Coming
home is
better!
~When
people say
you look
"Great"...they
add
"for
your
age!"
~When you
needed the
discount,
you paid
full
price.
Now you
get
discounts
on
everything...movies,
hotels,
flights,
but you're
too tired
to use
them.
~You
forget
names....
but it's
OKbecause
other
people
forgotthey
even knew
you!!!
~The 5
pounds you
wanted to
loseis
now 15 and
you have a
better
chanceof
losing
your keys
than the
15 pounds.
~You
realize
you're
never
goingto
be really
good at
anything....
especially
golf.
~Your
spouse is
counting
on youto
remember
things you
don't
remember.
~The
things you
used to
care to
do,you
no longer
care to
do,but
you really
do care
that youdon't
care to do
them
anymore.
~Your
spouse
sleeps
better on
a lounge
chairwith
the TV
blaring
than he or
she does
in bed.It's
called
their
"pre-sleep".
~Remember
when your
mother
said,"Wear
clean
underwear
in case
you GET in
an
accident"?
Now you
bring
clean
underwear
in case
you HAVE
an
accident!
~You used
to say,"I
hope my
kids GET
married...
Now,
"I
hope they
STAY
married!"
~You miss
the days
when
everything
workedwith
just an
"ON"
and
"OFF"
switch..
~When
GOOGLE,
ipod,
email,
modem....
were
unheard
of, and a
mouse was
somethingthat
made you
climb on a
table
~You tend
to use
more 4
letter
words ...
"what?"..."when?"...
???
~Now that
you can
affordexpensive
jewelry,
it's not
safe to
wear it
anywhere.
~Your
husband/wife
has a
night out
with the
guys or
galsbut
is home by
9:00 P.M.
Next week
it will be
8:30 P.M.
~You read
100 pages
into a
book
before you
realize
you've
read it.
~Notice
everything
they sell
in stores
is
"sleeveless"?!!!
~What used
to be
freckles
are now
liver
spots.
~Everybody
whispers.
~Now
that your
spouse has
retired
...
you'd give
anything
if he/she
would find
a job!
~You have
3 sizes of
clothes in
your
closet ...
2 of which
you will
never
wear.
~~~~But
old is
good in
some
things:
old songs,
old
movies,
And best
of all,
OLD
FRIENDS!!
Love
you,
FOUR
LETTER WORDS
Forwarded
by Eduard Grünwald
Please
excuse the four letter words in the following
story.
I would have deleted them, but it would lose its
impact without them..
Well,"
said her mother, "so how was the
honeymoon?"
"Oh, mama," she replied, "the
honeymoon was wonderful! So romantic..."
Suddenly she burst out crying. "But, mama, as
soon as we returned, Sam started using the most
horrible Language -- things I'd never heard
before! I mean all these awful four-letter words!
You've got to take me Home..., "PLEASE
MAMA!"
"Sarah,
Sarah," her mother said, "calm down! You
need to stay with your husband and work this out.
Now, Tell me, what could be so awful? WHAT
four-letter words?"
"Please don't make me tell you, mama,"
wept the daughter, "I'm so embarrassed,
they're just too awful! COME GET ME,
PLEASE!!"*
"Darling, baby, you must tell me what has you
so upset. Tell your mother these horrible
four-letter words!"
Sobbing,
the bride said, "Oh, Mama..., he used words
like: dust, wash, iron, and cook..."
"I'll
pick you up in twenty minutes."
CHILDREN
IN CHURCH
A
little boy
was
attending
his first
wedding.
After the
service,
his cousin
asked him,
"How
many women
can a man
marry?"
"Sixteen,"
the boy
responded.
His cousin
was amazed
that he
had an
answer so
quickly.
"How
do you
know
that?"
"Easy,"
the little
boy said.
"All
you have
to do is
add it up,
like the
pastor
said,
4 better,
4 worse, 4
richer, 4
poorer."
After
a church
service on
Sunday
morning, a
young boy
suddenly
announced
to his
mother,
"Mom,
I've
decided to
become a
minister
when I
grow
up."
"That's
okay with
us, but
what made
you decide
that?"
"Well,"
said the
little
boy,
"I
have to go
to church
on Sunday
anyway,
And I
figure it
will be
more fun
to stand
up and
yell, than
to sit and
listen."
A
boy was
watching
his
father, a
pastor,
write a
sermon.
"How
do you
know what
to
say?"
he asked.
"Why,
God tells
me."
"Oh,
then why
do you
keep
crossing
things
out?"
A
little
girl
became
restless
as the
preacher's
sermon
dragged on
and on.
Finally,
she leaned
over to
her mother
and
whispered,
"Mommy,
if we give
him the
money now,
will he
let us
go?"
Ms.
Terri
asked her
Sunday
School
class to
draw
pictures
of their
favorite
Bible
stories.
She was
puzzled by
Kyle's
picture,
which
showed
four
people on
an
airplane,
So she
asked him
which
story it
was meant
to
represent.
"The
Flight to Egypt
,"
was his
reply.
Pointing
at each
figure,
Ms. Terri
said,
"That
must be
Mary,
Joseph,
and Baby
Jesus.
But who's
the fourth
person?"
"Oh,
that's
Pontius -
the
pilot!"
The
Sunday
School
Teacher
asks,
"Now,
Johnny,
tell me
frankly do
you say
prayers
before
eating?"
"No
ma'am,"
little
Johnny
replies, I
don't have
to.
My mom is
a good
cook."
A
little
girl was
sitting on
her
grandfather's
lap as he
read her a
bedtime
story.
From time
to time,
she would
take her
eyes off
the book
and reach
up to
touch his
wrinkled
cheek.
She was
alternately
stroking
her own
cheek,
then his
again.
Finally
she spoke
up,
"Grandpa,
did God
make
you?"
"Yes,
sweetheart,"
he
answered,
"God
made me a
long time
ago."
"Oh,"
she
paused,
"Grandpa,
did God
make me
too?"
"Yes,
indeed,
honey,"
he said,
"God
made you
just a
little
while
ago."
Feeling
their
respective
faces
again, she
observed,
"God's
getting
better at
it, isn't
he ?"
AM
I A FIREMAN YET?
In
Phoenix ,
Arizona a
26-year-old
mother
stared
down at
her 6 year
old son,
who was
dying of
terminal
leukemia.Although
her heart
was filled
with
sadness,
she also
had a
strong
feeling of
determination.
Like any
parent,
she wanted
her son to
grow up
&
fulfill
all his
dreams.
Now that
was no
longer
possible;
the
leukemia
would see
to that.
But she
still
wanted her
son's
dream to
come true.
She
took her
son' s
hand and
asked,
'Billy,
did you
ever think
about what
you wanted
to be once
you grew
up?
Did
you ever
dream and
wish what
you would
do with
your
life?'
Mommy,
'I always
wanted to
be a
fireman
when I
grew up.'
Mom smiled
back and
said,
'Let's
see if we
can make
your wish
come
true.'
Later
that day
she went
to her
local fire
Department
in Phoenix
, where
she met
Fireman
Bob, who
had a
heart as
big as
ArizonaShe
explained
her son's
final wish
and asked
if it
might be
possible
to give
her 6
year-old
son a ride
around the
block on a
fire
engine.
Fireman
Bob said,
'Look,
we can do
better
than that.
If you'll
have your
son ready
at seven
o'clock
Wednesday
morning,
we'll make
him an
honorary
Fireman
for the
whole day.
He can
come down
to the
fire
station,
eat with
us, go out
on all the
fire
calls, the
whole nine
yards!And
if you'll
give us
his sizes,
we'll get
a real
fire
uniform
for him,
with a
real fire
hat - not
a toy -
one-with
the emblem
of the
Phoenix
Fire
Department
on it, and
a yellow
slicker
like we
wear and
rubber
boots.'
'They're
all
manufactured
right here
in Phoenix
, so we
can get
them
fast.'
Three
days later
Fireman
Bob picked
up Billy,
dressed
him in his
uniform
and
escorted
him from
his
hospital
bed to the
waiting
hook and
ladder
truck.
Billy got
to sit on
the back
of the
truck and
help steer
it back to
the fire
station.
He was in
heaven.
There
were three
fire calls
in Phoenix
that day
and Billy
got to go
out on all
three
calls. He
rode in
the
different
fire
engines,
the
Paramedic's'
van, and
even the
fire
chief's
car. He
was also
videotaped
for the
local news
program.
Having
his dream
come true,
with all
the love
and
attention
that was
lavished
upon him,
so deeply
touched
Billy,
that he
lived
three
months
longer
than any
doctor
thought
possible.
One
night all
of his
vital
signs
began to
drop
dramatically
and the
head
nurse, who
believed
in the
hospice
concept -
that no
one should
die alone,
began to
call the
family
members to
the
hospital.
Then she
remembered
the day
Billy had
spent as a
Fireman,
so she
called the
Fire Chief
and asked
if it
would be
possible
to send a
fireman in
uniform to
the
hospital
to be with
Billy as
he made
his
transition.
The
chief
replied,
'We can do
better
than that.
We'll be
there in
five
minutes..
Will you
please do
me a
favor?
When you
hear the
sirens
screaming
and see
the lights
flashing,
will you
announce
over the
PA system
that there
is not a
fire?'
'It's
the
department
coming to
see one of
its finest
members
one more
time And
will you
open the
window to
his room?'
About
five
minutes
later a
hook and
ladder
truck
arrived at
the
hospital
and
extended
its ladder
up to
Billy's
third
floor open
window--------
5
fire-fighters
climbed up
the ladder
into
Billy's
room. With
his
mother's
permission,
they
hugged him
and held
him and
told him
how much
they LOVED
him.
With
His dying
breath,
Billy
looked up
at the
fire chief
and said,
'Chief,
am I
really a
fireman
now?'
'Billy,
you are,
and The
Head
Chief,
Jesus, is
holding
your
hand,' the
Chief
said.
With
those
words,
Billy
smiled and
said,
'I know,
He's been
holding my
hand all
day, andThe
angels
have been
Singing..'
INTEL Visibly Smart
Experience Show in Dresden 19/20 August 2011
Intel
Visibly Smart Experience is a collaboration between Intel
and Visual Drugstore in presenting to the public a series 3D
live projection mapping tours in Dresden, Berlin, Munich,
Hamburg respectively. The project will take place with the
Visual Drugstore MMOV (Multi Media Off-Road Vehicle). It is
due to the innovative technology provided by Intel that it
is possible for the MMOV- a world-wide unique projection
vehicle.
The
AIDA
project (Affective, Intelligent Driving Agent), a
collaboration between Volkswagen of America and the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (SENSEable
City Lab), is a platform comprising of an intelligent
navigation system that aims to bring an innovative driving
experience. It's goal is a navigation system that becomes
familiar with both the driver and the city.
Instead
of focusing solely on determining routes to a specified
waypoint, the system utilizes analysis of driver behavior in
order to identify the set of goals the driver would like to
achieve. Furthermore, AIDA involves an understanding of the
city beyond what can be seen through the windshield,
incorporating information such as business and shopping
districts, tourist and residential areas, as well as
real-time event information.
Have
a look at the following video. There is still room for
improvement. The advertisements on the dashboard are very
distracting and one would certainly crash the car within
minutes. But if cars drive autonomously in future, this
might be a nice feature.
