George
Washington's Birthday
http://www.archives.gov/legislative/features/washington/
George
Washington's Birthday is
celebrated as a federal
holiday on the third Monday in
February. It is one of eleven
permanent holidays established
by Congress.
Federal holidays apply only to
the federal government and the
District of Columbia; Congress
has never declared a national
holiday binding in all states
and each state decides its own
legal holidays.
George Washington was born in
Virginia on February 11, 1731,
according to the then-used
Julian calendar. In 1752,
however, Britain and all its
colonies adopted the Gregorian
calendar, which placed
Washington's birth on February
22, 1732.
Americans celebrated
Washington's Birthday long
before Congress declared it a
federal holiday. The
centennial of his birth
prompted festivities
nationally and Congress
established a Joint Committee
to arrange for the occasion.
At the recommendation of the
Committee, chaired by Henry
Clay of the Senate and
Philemon Thomas of the House,
Congress adjourned on February
22, 1832 out of respect for
Washington's memory and in
commemoration of his birth.
Prompted by a memorial from
the mayor and other citizens
of Philadelphia, the House and
Senate commemorated the 130th
Anniversary of Washington's
birth by reading aloud his
Farewell Address.
In a special joint session
held in the House Chamber, the
House and Senate, along with
several cabinet officials,
Justices of the Supreme Court
and high-ranking officers of
the Army and Navy, gathered to
listen to the Secretary of
State read the address aloud.
Eventually, the reading
of George Washington's
Farewell Address became an
annual event for the Senate, a
tradition that is still
observed to this day.
Washington's Birthday,
however, did not become a
legal holiday until January
31, 1879 when Congress added
February 22nd to the list of
holidays to be observed by
federal employees in the
District of Columbia. The act
did not stipulate that
employees were to be paid for
the holiday - in fact, some
government employees in the
District of Columbia were paid
while others were not.
In 1885, Congress resolved
this discrepancy with
legislation that required
federal employees to be paid
for all federal holidays and
made federal holidays
applicable to all
federal government employees,
including those employed
outside the Washington DC
area.
Washington's Birthday was
celebrated on February 22nd
until well into the 20th
Century. However, in 1968
Congress passed the Monday
Holiday Law to "provide
uniform annual observances of
certain legal public holidays
on Mondays." By creating
more 3-day weekends, Congress
hoped to "bring
substantial benefits to both
the spiritual and economic
life of the Nation."
One of the provisions of this
act changed the observance of
Washington's Birthday from
February 22nd to the third
Monday in February.
Ironically, this guaranteed
that the holiday would never
be celebrated on Washington's
actual birthday, as the third
Monday in February cannot fall
any later than February 21.
Contrary to popular belief,
neither Congress nor the
President has ever stipulated
that the name of the holiday
observed as Washington's
Birthday be changed to
"President's Day."
Since 1862 there has been a
tradition in the United
States Senate that
George Washington's Farewell
Address be read on his
birthday. Citizens had asked
that this be done in light of
the approaching Civil War. The
annual tradition continues
with the reading of the
address on or near
Washington's Birthday.

Abraham
Lincoln's Birthday
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln%27s_Birthday
Lincoln's Birthday is a legal
holiday in some U.S. states
including California,
Connecticut, Illinois,
Missouri, New Jersey, New
York, and Indiana. It is
observed on the anniversary of
Abraham Lincoln's birth on
February 12, 1809.
The earliest known observance
of Lincoln's birthday occurred
in Buffalo, New York, in 1874.
Julius Francis (d. 1881), a
Buffalo druggist, made it his
life's mission to honor the
slain president. He repeatedly
petitioned Congress to
establish Lincoln's birthday
as a legal holiday.
The day is marked by
traditional wreath-laying
ceremonies at Abraham Lincoln
Birthplace National Historic
Site in Hodgenville, Kentucky,
and at the Lincoln Memorial in
Washington, DC. The latter has
been the site of a ceremony
ever since the Memorial was
dedicated. Since that event in
1922, observances continue to
be organized by the Lincoln
Birthday National
Commemorative Committee and by
the Military Order of the
Loyal Legion of the United
States (MOLLUS). A wreath is
laid on behalf of the
President of the United
States, a custom also carried
out at the grave sites of all
US presidents on their
birthdays. Lincoln's tomb is
in Springfield, Illinois.
On February 12, 2009, the
annual wreath-laying ceremony
at the Lincoln Memorial
commemorated Lincoln's 200th
birthday in grand fashion. An
extended ceremony, organized
by the Abraham Lincoln
Bicentennial Commission (ALBC)
and with help from MOLLUS,
featured musical performances
and the U.S. Marine Corps.
Band. The morning celebration
also featured remarks by Sen.
Dick Durbin; Lincoln scholar
and ALBC Co-Chair Harold
Holzer; recently retired Rhode
Island Supreme Court Chief
Justice – and ALBC
Commissioner – Frank J.
Williams; and author Nikki
Giovanni reciting her newest
work, which was written
especially for the
Bicentennial.
As part of Lincoln's birthday
bicentennial, the U.S. Mint
released four new pennies. The
commemorative coins have new
designs on the reverse showing
stages of his life. The first
went into circulation on
February 12, 2009. The
standard portrait of Lincoln's
head remains on the front. The
new designs include a log
cabin representing his
birthplace, Lincoln as a young
man reading while sitting on a
log that he was taking a break
from splitting, Lincoln as a
state legislator in front of
the Illinois capitol, and the
partially built dome of the
U.S. Capitol.
Many states that had formerly
observed Lincoln's birthday
have created a joint holiday
to honor both Lincoln and
George Washington, sometimes
calling it "Presidents
Day". It coincides with
the Federal holiday officially
designated "Washington's
Birthday", observed on
the third Monday of February.
There has never been an annual
Federal holiday honoring
Lincoln.
|
SADLY
Today, the February holiday
has become well-known for
being a day in which many
stores, especially car
dealers, hold sales. Until the
late 1980s, corporate
businesses generally closed on
this day, similar to present
corporate practices on Memorial
Day or Christmas
Day. With the late
1980s advertising push to
rename the holiday, more and
more businesses are staying
open on the holiday each year,
and, as on Veterans
Day and Columbus
Day, most delivery
services outside of the U.S.
Postal Service now
offer regular service on the
day as well. Some public
transit systems have also gone
to regular schedules on the
day. Many colleges and
universities hold regular
classes and operations on
Presidents Day.
Various
theories exist for this, one
accepted reason being to make
up for the growing trend of
corporations to close in
observance of the Birthday
of Martin Luther King, Jr.
However, when reviewing the
Uniform Monday Holiday Bill
debate of 1968 in the
Congressional Record, one
notes that supporters of the
Bill were intent on moving
federal holidays to Mondays to
promote business. Over time,
as with many federal holidays,
few Americans actually
celebrate Washington's
Birthday, and it is mainly
known as a day off from work
or school, although many
non-governmental workers do
not take the day off.
Consequently, some schools,
which used to close for a
single day for both Lincoln's
and Washington's birthday, now
often close for the entire
week (beginning with the
Monday holiday) as a
"mid-winter recess".

Lesson
Because Presidents' Day is not
the official name of the
federal holiday, there is
variation in how it is
rendered. Both Presidents' Day
and Presidents' Day are today
common, and both are
considered correct by
dictionaries and usage
manuals. Presidents' Day was
once the predominant style,
and it is still favored by the
majority of significant
authorities—notably, The
Chicago Manual of Style
(followed by most book
publishers and some
magazines), The
American Heritage Dictionary
of the English Language,
Webster's
Third International Dictionary,
and Garner's
Modern American Usage.
In recent years, as the use of
attributive nouns (nouns
acting as modifiers) has
become more widespread, the
popularity of Presidents Day
has increased.
This style is favored by the Associated
Press Stylebook
(followed by most newspapers
and some magazines) and the
Writer's Digest Grammar Desk
Reference (ISBN
978-1582973357).

Rooney's Commentary on Prayer
|
Andy
Rooney says:
I don't believe in Santa Claus,
but I'm not going to sue somebody for
singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December.
I don't agree with Darwin, but I didn't
go out and hire a lawyer when my high
school teacher taught his Theory of
Evolution.
Life, liberty or your pursuit of
happiness will not be endangered because
someone says a 30-second prayer before a
football game. So what's the big
deal? It's not like somebody is up
there reading the entire Book of Acts.
They're just talking to a God they
believe in and asking him to grant
safety to the players on the field and
the fans going home from the game.
But it's a Christian
prayer, some will argue.
Yes, and this is the United
States of America and Canada,
countries founded on Christian
principles. According to our very
own phone book, Christian
churches outnumber all others
better than 200-to-1. So what
would you expect -- somebody chanting Hare
Krishna?
If I went to a football game in Jerusalem,
I would expect to hear a Jewish
prayer.
If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad,
I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer.
If
I went
to a ping pong match in China,
I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha.
|
|
|
And
I wouldn't be offended. It
wouldn't bother me one bit.
When
in Rome ....
But what about the atheists?
Is another argument.
What
about them? Nobody is asking them
to be baptized. We're not going to
pass the collection plate. Just
humor us for 30 seconds. If that's
asking too much, bring a Walkman or a
pair of ear plugs. Go to the
bathroom. Visit the concession
stand. Call your lawyer!
Unfortunately, one or two will
make that call. One or two will
tell thousands what they can and cannot
do. I don't think a short prayer
at a football game is going to shake the
world's foundations.
Christians are just sick and
tired of turning the other cheek while
our courts strip us of all our
rights. Our parents and
grandparents taught us to pray before
eating, to pray before we go to sleep.
Our Bible tells us to pray without
ceasing. Now a handful of people
and their lawyers are telling us to
cease praying.
God,
help us. And, if that last
sentence offends you, well, just sue me!
|
The silent majority has been
silent too long. It's time we tell
that one or two who scream loud enough
to be heard that the vast majority
doesn't care what they want. It is
time that the majority
rules! It's time we tell
them, "You don't have to pray; you
don't have to say the Pledge
of Allegiance; you don't have to
believe in God or attend services that
honor Him. That is your right, and
we will honor your right; but by golly,
you are no longer going to take our
rights away. We are fighting back,
and we WILL WIN!"
God
bless us one and all...Especially those
who denounce Him, God
bless America
and Canada,
despite all our faults, We are still the
greatest nations of all. God bless
our service men who are fighting to
protect our right to pray and worship
God.
|
|
|
Let's make 2011 the year the silent
majority is heard and we put God back as
the foundation of our families and
institutions. And, our military
forces come home from all the wars.
Keep
looking up.

GERMANY
HONORS AMERICAN HEROES
WITH
THE GOLD CROSS METAL
Forwarded
From Trenton Donauschwaben
The German Armed Forces recently awarded 14 American
soldiers one of Germany’s highest military honors for
valor, the Gold Cross of Honor of the German Armed Forces.
This is the first time non-Germans have even received this
award.
They received the honor for risking their own lives
in the rescue of wounded German soldiers in northern
Afghanistan. Lt, General Bruno Kasdorf of Germany presented
the Americans with the award at Kunduz on May 12, 2010. The
U.S. Army also honored them in Katterbach, Germany on
December 13, 2010.
The Americans were members of a helicopter MedEvac
unit who came to the aid of the Bundeswehr soldiers. The
Germans were ambushed by more than 200 Taiban fighters while
on patrol on April 2nd in Kunduz. The Black Hawk copters had
to make multiple trips to evacuate the German from the
battle zone, as U.S. Apache copters provided defense. Eleven
wounded Ger-mans were extracted, three later died from their
injuries.
Those awarded were; Capt. Robert McDonough, Chief Warrant
Officers, Jason LaCrosse, Steven Husted & Nelson Visaya,
Jason Brown, Sean Johnson & Eric Wells, Staff Sgt.
Travis Brown, Sgt.s. William Ebel, Antonio Gattis &
Steven Shumaker and Specialists, Matthew Baker, Todd
Marchese & Gregory Martinez. All are from the 12th
Combat Aviation Brigade, based out of Germany. What a great
honor for these fine American heros.

Donauschwaben-Protest
Bei Bundespräsident
Gegen
Tito-Ehrung
Forwarded
by Eduard Grünwald
Liebe Freunde der Donauschwaben,
Die
Kulturstiftung ist geschockt angesichts der Tatsache, dass
der Massenmörder Tito noch immer die höchste
bundesdeutsche Auszeichnung innehat. Deshalb stellte die
Donauschwäbische Kulturstiftung gemeinsam mit dem
Bundesverband der Landsmannschaft der Donauschwaben (in
Deutschland) bei Bundespräsident Christian Wulff den Antrag,
dem kommunistischen Diktator diese Ehrung posthum
abzuerkennen.
Donauschwaben fordern: Wulff soll Tito Verdienstorden
aberkennen
abzuerkennen.
unmittelbar nachfolgenden Partisanen entziehen.
Werner Harasym

Sehr
geehrter Herr Bundespräsident,
mit
Entsetzen haben wir in „Der Spiegel" Nr.
49/2010 vom 6. Dezember 2010 gelesen, dass der
einstige jugoslawische Staatschef Josip Broz Tito
als Träger des höchsten deutschen Ordens, der
Sonderstufe des Großkreuzes des Verdienstordens
der Bundesrepublik Deutschland geführt wird.
Diese
Auszeichnung hatte Tito 1974 im Rahmen eines mehrtägigen
Staatsbesuches in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland
auf Betreiben des damaligen Bundeskanzlers Willy
Brandt von Bundespräsident Gustav Heinemann
erhalten. Diese Ehrung war eine unglaubliche
Fehlentscheidung, weshalb der Weltdachverband der
Donauschwaben – die Dachorganisation der
deutschen Volkszugehörigen aus dem ehemaligen
Jugoslawien, aus Ungarn und dem rumänischen Banat
und Sathmar – hiermit den Antrag stellt, den
Orden posthum abzuerkennen.
Begründung:
Josip
Broz Tito ist der oberste Verantwortliche für
ungeheure Kriegsverbrechen, Verbrechen gegen die
Menschheit und Völkermord, begangen während und
noch Jahre nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg im
ehemaligen Jugoslawien, einschließlich
Auftragsmorde im Ausland (auch in Deutschland).
Erläuterung:
Zivilisten
deutscher Volkszugehörigkeit
Die
jugoslawischen Staatsbürger deutscher Volkszugehörigkeit
wurden kollektiv und ohne jede rechtliche Prüfung
(geschweige denn eines Nachweises irgendeiner
Schuld) zu Volksfeinden erklärt, entrechtet,
enteignet, für unvorstellbare Mordorgien
freigegeben und schließlich – soweit sie sich
noch in Titos Machtbereich befanden – in
Konzentrationslager verbracht. Von den ursprünglich
540.000 Volksdeutschen Bürgern Jugoslawiens waren
bei der kommunistischen Machtübernahme noch rund
200.000 Zivilisten in ihrer angestammten Heimat.
Zivilisten neben einigen wenigen
wehrdienstuntauglichen oder freigestellten Männern
fast ausschließlich Kinder, Frauen und alte Männer.
Bereits
im Herbst 1944 wurden etwa 10.000 Männer zwischen
16 und 60 Jahren grausam ermordet. Um die
Jahreswende 1944/45 wurden rund 12.000 Arbeitsfähige
zur Zwangsarbeit in die Sowjetunion deportiert.
Alle übrigen Arbeitsfähigen wurden Anfang 1945
in eine Reihe von Arbeitslagern, die Arbeitsunfähigen
(Alte, Kinder, Kranke) in „Lager mit
Sonderstatus" (Vernichtungslager) inhaftiert.
Durch
gezielte Mordaktionen, grausame Misshandlungen,
systematisches Verhungernlassen und unbehandelten
Krankheiten betrug die Gesamtzahl der zivilen
Todesopfer von 1944 bis 1948 (3,5 Jahre) etwa
64.000, das ist rund ein Drittel der 200.000 in
Titos Hände gefallenen zivilen deutschen
Volkszugehörigen!
Alle
diese Tatsachen und Zahlen sind nachvollziehbar
dokumentiert, u. a. in einem vierbändigen Werk
Deutsche
Kriegsgefangene
Zehntausende
gefangene deutsche Soldaten – volksdeutsche und
reichsdeutsche – wurden von Titos Schergen völkerrechtswidrig
ermordet. Das Offiziersgefangenenlager 233 in
Werschetz/Banat (heutiger Name Vršac) war das
schlimmste Lager der gesamten deutschen
Kriegsgefangenengeschichte in fünf Kontinenten.
Daher hat ihm die wissenschaftliche Kommission der
deutschen Bundesregierung im Rahmen ihrer 22-bändigen
Veröffentlichung „Zur Geschichte der deutschen
Kriegsgefangenen des Zweiten Weltkrieges" den
Band „Die deutschen Kriegsgefangenen in
Jugoslawien 1949–1953: Bd I/2" gewidmet.
Jedem Dienstgrad
wurde eine bestimmte Opferzahl zugeordnet, so dass
die vorgegebene Gesamtzahl herauskam. Mit
unbeschreiblichen, unfassbaren Foltermethoden
wurden die Gefangenen zu den gewünschten Geständnissen
gezwungen. Wer nicht vorher starb oder seelisch
zugrunde ging, unterschrieb schließlich alles.
Diese „Geständnisse" dienten dann als
Basis für ebenso willkürliche Verurteilungen zum
Tode oder zu langjährigen Haftstrafen.
Bundeskanzler Dr. Konrad Adenauer erklärte dazu
am 27. Januar 1950 im Deutschen Bundestag u. a.:
Kriegsverbrechen an anderen jugoslawischen
Volksgruppen: Zehntausende Kroaten, Slowenen,
(also politische) Widersacher. Für letztere
wurden auch spezielle Konzentrationslager
errichtet,
z.
Massengräbern, insbesondere in Slowenien,
entzieht nun den Leugnern allmählich den Boden.
Fazit
Gustav
Heinemann und Willy Brandt wussten genau, dass
Tito einer der größten Menschheitsverbrecher des

Posthum
Aberkennung des Ordens an Josip Broz Tito
Liebe
Freunde, liebe Landsleute,
durch
Veröffentlichung in „Der Spiegel“ Folge
eigenen etwas ausführlicheren Schreiben an
Bundespräsident Christian Wulff auf die
Verbrechen des damaligen jugoslawischen
Staatschefs, Josip Broz Tito hingewiesen und
ebenfalls die Aberkennung des Ordens posthum
verlangt.
In
Anlage übersende ich Ihnen den Wortlaut des
Schreibens an Bundespräsident Christian Wulff.
In
heimatlicher Verbundenheit
Josef
Jerger
Vizepräsident
des Weltdachverbandes
der
Donauschwaben e.V.
