SPECIAL EVENT ANNOUNCEMENTS

IMPORTANT KITCHENER ANNOUNCEMENT

2012 LANDESTREFFEN 2012

Presidential Welcome

I am very excited that the Schwaben Club of Kitchener will be the host for 2012 Landestreffen der Donauschwaben. Our members are working hard to ensure you will experience a memorable weekend filled with good music, great food and all the friendly and inviting hospitality our Club has to offer. Kitchener is situated in the beautiful region of South-Western Ontario. Its pioneer heritage reflects the many German immigrants who settled in this region. In fact, the city of Kitchener was originally called Berlin. The Schwaben Club is one of five German clubs in the Kitchener area and we all work together to help further our culture and language. Many of our city's annual events continue to reflect our German heritage from Oktoberfest to our Christkindl Market to our German Pioneers Day.

I would encourage you to plan a longer stay and take in some of the wonderful attractions that are within driving distance. The Waterloo Farmers Market, St Jacobs Village, The Centre in the Square performing arts centre, Kitchener Museum, and Pioneer Village are just a few of our local attractions. Toronto and Niagara Falls are also just 90 minutes down the road. Take in the Metro Toronto Zoo, a Blue Jays baseball game, Ontario Place, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Niagara Falls Casino, or any of our many other options for world class entertainment. If the outdoors is your thing, then before or after our event, take in some of our stunning northern lakes and parks and all they have to offer.

I invite you to come and be our guests from August 31st to September 2nd, 2012 and to take in all the sights, sounds, and tastes we have to offer. We’ve provided some links below to some of our attractions to help with your preparations — start planning your trip today!

The “Out of the Box” Dance Contest

WATCH FOR INFORMATION CHANGES

Here are the important points:

  1. We provide the song. Just download the mp3 using icon at right and you’re ready to start. We’ve already edited it to competition length, so please use our copy only.

  2. We provide the judges. They’ll include Kitchener Club and dance group members. Since our groups have been dancing to contemporary music for years, they’ll be the ones judging the contest.

  3. We provide the prizes. That’s right! There are real cash prizes to be won.

  4. You provide the choreography. Because we can’t do everything! This is where your group gets to shine. Take the music and make the best, most energetic, most exciting dance you can.

Any steps are allowed, any patterns are allowed — whatever you think will look best. All dances must be original works of course, so no copying anything already out there. We want to see the very best from everybody.

Of course, all contests must have some rules, so here they are:

  1. Groups must register in advance. Download the Dance Contest Registration Form (at right), fill it out, and send it back before the deadline.

  2. There is NO cost to register. We don’t want anything holding anyone back in this contest. We just want to know in advance how many groups want to participate.

  3. There is a 10 (ten) group limit to this contest — decided on a First Registered, First In basis. So don’t wait too long to register; the spots could go quickly. There is also going to be a 4 (four) group minimum. Unfortunately, if we go below that, it won’t be feasible to hold the contest anymore. So get everyone involved so we can have an amazing turnout!

  4. There is no MAXIMUM as to how many couples can be in each group, but there is a 4 (four) couple MINIMUM. Fewer than that is too easy — there has to be a little bit of a challenge!

  5. *NEW* Traditional German costumes must be worn.

  6. *NEW* Props may be used (as long as they’re not dangerous, flammable, or contain any alcohol if underage dancers are performing).

  7. *NEW* Non-German steps may be used, but the overall feel, style and steps of the dance must be German Folk.

  8. *NEW* Groups may interpret the theme of the dance however they want, as long as they stay within the guidelines above.

The purpose of the “Out-of-the-Box” Dance Contest is to stretch the boundaries of German Folk dancing. That means maintaining traditional costumes, mostly traditional steps, and adding props if desired. It is the combination of the unconventional music, along with a high energy level and the unique step/pattern additions that will really make the difference! So, put on you thinking caps. This is your chance to blow the roof off with your energy and passion. Don’t let this chance go to waste — show everyone what you’re capable of, and maybe take home a cool prize for your hard work.

Check the Events Schedule for the time and location of the Dance Contest. We hope to see you all there!

Sing-a-long mit der Katie-Bas

Everybody has their favourites. Those classic folk songs you love, the ones you just have to sing along with whenever you hear them being played. Now’s your chance to join all the others out there who share your passion for those wonderful songs. Led by the Schwaben Club’s own Catherine Thompson, Accordionist Extraordinaire, you can spend an hour in friendship and fun, enjoying the songs we all love to hear.

There is no admission fee to participate — only your singing voice is needed. And no registration is needed either. Just show up and have fun. And if you’re worried that your favourites might not be included, click on the icon at right to put in a request. We’ll forward them all to Katie-Bas so she knows not to miss them.

There will be a sing-a-long on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons, so if you miss the first one, you can catch the second one. And if you caught the first and had a blast, then come again on Sunday — and bring your friends!

Check the Events Schedule for the time and location of the Sing-a-longs. We hope to see you all there!
