History of Arkansas

The first European to reach Arkansas was the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in the middle of the 16th century. Arkansas is one of several U.S. states formed from the territory purchased from Napoleon Bonaparte in the Louisiana Purchase. The early Spanish or French explorers of the state gave it its name, probably a phonetic spelling of the Illinois word for the Quapaw people, who lived downriver from them.[1]

The region is organized as the Territory of Arkansas on July 4, 1819, but the territory was admitted to the Union as the state of Arkansas on June 15, 1836, as the 25th state and the 13th slave state.

I am one of the Thorntons who didn't stay long in one spot.  When I was 19 I lived in British Columbia, Canada, then in a lot of US States always hoping to get back to Madeira.  I married 2 servicemen, hence the moves.  Then I married a nuclear engineer and we both worked in the nuclear power field.  We also lived in many States.  We went to Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii.  We traveled in Mexico. ...

     I have 3 children.

Teresa (Terry 47) - married Martin Hinton (nuclear engineer).  1 boy James (married Michelle and have 3 girls); 1 girl Heather (not married).  They live in Pasco, WA.

Michael Coleman (45) separated; Michael is a manager for a construction company in Albuquerque; (Rio Rancho near Albuquerque.

1 boy Tyler (20) (married to Dora)  Tyler is studying archaelogy ???; works as metal cutter.

1 girl Amanda (17) graduates this year.  Lives in Albuquerque; lives with mother in Aztec, New Mexico (???)

Ginger (42) married Kurt Van Auben; 1 child, Kirstin age 18.  Ginger is a school teacher; has BA in English; will graduate from University of Arizona with her MA in math.  Next year she will have a MA in Science.  She teaches Advanced math at a middle school here.

In California you have your Uncle Billy.  He is in poor health.  Lives alone and is lonely.

Then, your Aunt Erma (Gladys) is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's.  She has 4 girls.  Wanda died in December.  But that is in my chart I'm sending you.  Each of Erma's girls has children.

Note: Aunt Ruth was an evangelist and missionary. She was the only person I have ever met that really lived what she believed. She is the one that taught us children about the Lord and the Bible. I will always be grateful, if it wasn't for her, I would not be saved and serving the Lord to this day. She was with the Indians in Arizona for many years and had a great love for them. She had been going to the Philipines and working as a missionary for the last few years of her life, she loved it, she always said the Philipino's were wonderful generous people and she loved it there. Infact, she was packed and ready to leave to go there when Jesus called her on home to be with Him.

John Brevard, He was among the first Maryland Colonist in Rowan [Iredell] Co, NC. Sometime between 1740 & 1750, settling about two miles from Center church. At the commencement of the Rev. War, he, then, and old and infirm man, had 8 sons and 4 daughters. John was a well known and influential Whig, & early installed his partiotic principles into the minds of his children. His house and buildings were burned by the British for the reason that he had eight sons in the rebel army [Ref: WSR-113, & CLH-233,234 & Marylanders to Carolina by Henry C. Penden Jr.] James Alexander, John Brevard & Robert Linton all from "the head of Elk" neighborhood, attended Presbytery 31 Oct 1727 [Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine pg 89]

Brevard, County Seat of Transylvania County, NC, was named to honor John Brevard Jr. & his sons for their outstanding service in the American Revolution.

He represented Rowan County in the Provincial Congress.

3. Robert Brevard m. [1] Robert Harris [2] William Lee Davidson 10 Dec 1767 Rowan Co, NC son of George Davidson & Margaret Ware, he was b. 1746 Chestnut Level, Chester Co, PA d. 1 Feb 1781 Cowan's Ford, Mecklenburg Co, NC [killed in battle] Buried Hopewell Church Cemetery

Was Eduacated at the Academy of Charlotte; he was made Major of the 4th Regiment and Thomas Polk was made Colonel: and forming a part of a brigade Nash join the Grand Army of the North under Washington; it was for threeyears under the eye of that great chief, and participated in the battles of Brandywine Sept 1777, Germantown, Oct 1777, and Monmouth, June 1778. The North Carolina Troops were sent in Nov. 1779 to erinforce the Southern Army, commanded by Major General Lincoln at Charleston.

There are no particulars recorded of the services of Davidon in the actions of Brandywine, Monmourth, or Germantown, and such has been the carelessness or neglect. As to North Carolina, that the student of history may look in vain, for any statement or notice of the troops of NC. Except that General Nash was killed at Germantown, and that Colonels Polk and Buncombe were wounded. But the brigade of NC troops wes, unquestionably, a part of the Army, and bravely performed its duty.

Previous to this event, he had been promoted tot he command of a regiment. As he passed through NC, DAvidson obtained permission to visit his family, which he had not seen for nearly three years. The delay produced by this vist, saved him from captivity, for on his arrival at Charleston, he found it so closely invested that he was prevented from joining his regiment. Lincoln surrendered May 12, 1779. Davidson returned home and raised troops to suppress the Tories, who encouraged by the approach of the British, had become daring, desperate and dangerous. At Calson's Mill, he encountered a strong force of Tories, gave them battle and a severe engagement occured in which Davidson was dangerously wounded by a ball passing entirely through his body; this kept him from the field for two months. On his recovery he immediately went into active service, now promoted to be a Brigadier in place of General Rutherford, who was taken prisoner at Camden. he was active with Sumter and Davie, in checking the advance of the British Troops. To that intent the posted his command at Cowan's Ford, on the Carawaba. At daybreak, February 1, 1781, the British Army, under Lord Cornwallis, commenced crossing. The picket of General Davidson, challenged the enemy, and receiving no answer, fired.

Lord Cornwallis had his horse killed under him; Colonel Hall was killed, also three privates, and thirty-six wounded. General Davidson, in riding from the point where he expected the enemy to cross to the place where they did, was fired upon, a rifle ball passed through his heart and he fell dead from his horse. As the British only had muskets, and the Tories rifles, andhe was slain by a rifle shot, it is believed he fell by the hand of a Tory.

BIOGRAPHY: ROBERT BREVARD, third son & fourth child of John Brevard, Sr. & Katherine Mcknitt Brevard, was born "near the Head of Elk [River]" in Cecil County, Maryland, on 10 January 1718. Robert married Sarah Craig on 16 April 1744. This marriage is thought to have taken place in Maryland, but may have occured in Anson County, North Carolina, where Robert appears in early colonial records.

Robert Brevard migrated to Rowan County, N.C., with his brothers, John and Zebulon, and his sister Elizabeth circa 1745. Robert entered upon land at the headwaters pf Rocky River, located between lands owned by James and John Templeton, and George and Samuel Davidson. On 29 Sept 1749 he petitioned the Council of North Carolina for a warrant of land -640 acres. He made a second petition for a grant of patent on 640 acres in Anson, Rowan County on 28 Mar 1751. [Colonial Records for NC, Vol. IV, pp. 951, 959; NC Land Grants, Vol. XI, pp. 4-5; II, p. 10; X, p. 310]

Lord Granville granted to Robert Brevard of Anson, [Rowan Co] NC, 640 acres on Rocky River in that county on 25 Mar 1752. On 29 Jan 1755 Granville made a further grant to Robert Brevard of Rowan Co, NC of 102 acres on Rocky River. [Rowan Co, Deed Books III. pp. 156-159; IV, pp. 8857-858] Robert Brevard along with James Alexander, taught school in Rowan County before the Revolution. He owned only two slaves in 1768, and only seven in 1979, which would seem to indicate that he did not farm extensively, [Carolina Cradle-Robert W. Ramsey. University of NC Press, Chapel Hill, NC., 1964, pp. 177, 190] Following the Revolution Robert Brevard made a claim to the House of Commons and Senate of the State of North Carolina 1785. The nature and out come of this claim were not clear. Perhaps he was applying for a pension or to recover proberty lost during the war.

Robert and Sarah Brevard lived and died in Iredell Co, NC., this county had been formed from Rowan in 1788, and their residence through their time in NC. Whether Anson, Rowan, or Iredell, had likely been the same for more than fifty years. Robert Brevard drew up his will in August 1797, three years before his death on 20 Oct 1800. In his will he bequeathed tracts of land to his two youngest daughters. Apparently they were unmarried at the time, so this would be dowry for their future use. No other daughters were named, and we can assume they had already been provided for at the time of their marriages.

Interestubg bequeaths to his son Robert Brevard were: "My still and Vessels" and "Appraisement of a horse lost in the service of the United States" Robert was to be joint executor of his father's will with Alexander Young. Adam and John Brevard, nephews of Robert Brevard, and James Young were witnesses to Robert's will. Adam and John were sons of John Brevard Jr.

During the Revolution Robert served with Captain James Houston's Company of NC. No Further record of service was found.

While the British destroyed his house for good measure they tried to take his daughter Asenath to get her to reveal the hiding place of her husband Capt. James Houston who had been badly wounded in a previous battle>

Notes: Sarah Craig Brevard's will dated 30 Nov 1801 ws written several years before her reputed death in 1817. [American Families-American History Society, Inc., NY Vol. 25, "Brevard" p. 106] Sarah named all her married daughters by thier married names. Household utensils and furniture, clothing and slaves were bequeathed to the daughters. A large Bible was passed down to her son Robert Mcknitt [Brevard?]; Her son Robert and son-in-law John Huggins were appointed executors. Sarah signed her will with an X in the presence of Elihu King, another son-in-law, and A. C. Young.

The Craig family of Sarah Craig Brevard has not been determined. A James Craig lived in Cecil Co, MD in 1790. A Scotch Church of England family of Craiges, settled in Rowan Co, NC, by 1750. When Archibald died in 1758, his wife Mary Craige became administratix of his estate during the minority of their sons. Sons David and James Craige presently owned around 2000 acres of land on the Ydkin River. [History of Rowan County, NC Rev. Jethro Rumple. Reprint 1974 p. 236]

A Captain David Craig got a military grant of 3200 acres of land in Western NC [later Maury Co, TN] for his service in the Rev. War in 1808 his widow and sons settled on theCraig grant in TN. [Let the Drums Roll-Marise P. Lightfoot p. 139] between 1813-1819 Samuel, William, James and David Craig are in the court records of Maury Co, TN. Sarah Craig's relation, if any, to these Craig families is not known.

Clark County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2010, the population was 22,995. The county seat is Arkadelphia.

Clark County was Arkansas' third county, formed on December 15, 1818, alongside Hempstead and Pulaski counties. The county is named after William Clark who at the time was Governor of the Missouri Territory, which included present-day Arkansas. Arkadelphia was named as the county seat in 1842.

William Clark of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition and governor of the Missouri Territory, for whom Clark County is named; 1807.

Clark County was founded on December 15, 1818, as part of Missouri Territory. One of the original five counties composing Arkansas Territory when the territory was established in 1819, Clark County included all or parts of at least fifteen counties in present-day Arkansas and parts of six counties in what is now Oklahoma. The county was named for Missouri territorial governor William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

The county is part of two of Arkansas’s natural regions—the Ouachita Mountains and the Gulf Coastal Plain—and its physical characteristics made the area ideal for farming and hunting. Before Europeans arrived, Native Americans, particularly the Caddo, inhabited the land containing heavy forests, abundant game, rich soil, clear streams, and salt. Archaeological evidence attests to the lengthy presence of the Indians in the area.

European Exploration and Settlement
In the sixteenth century, Hernando de Soto was the first European known to explore the Ouachita Mountains region. He was followed more than a century later by the French, who named many of the county’s topological features. By the late 1700s, Europeans continued to explore and occupy the area, but Indians had largely vacated the area.

Louisiana Purchase through Early Statehood
Permanent settlement by Americans occurred soon after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In 1809, William Blakely established a blacksmith shop on the west bank of the Ouachita River at a site called Blakelytown (later named Arkadelphia). Across the river to the east, John Hemphill began operating a salt factory, one of the state’s earliest manufacturing concerns. By 1812, Jacob Barkman, often called the “Father of Clark County,” opened traffic on the Ouachita River to New Orleans, Louisiana, first by pirogue and keelboat and, in 1830, by steamboat. Barkman’s home served as the site of the first county court, the first post office, a stagecoach stop, a racetrack, and an ill-fated textile mill. Blakelytown’s first general store opened in 1817, operated by J. S. T. Callaway. Jonathan O. Callaway is credited with having built the town’s first hotel in 1843, and shortly thereafter, the Spence Hotel was constructed and became a well-known stopping place in the region. Moses Collins arrived in the county in 1830 and built a sawmill and a gristmill on Terre Noir Creek. A brickyard was established the same year. Reflecting the emphasis on the region’s abundant natural resources, agriculture dominated antebellum Clark County’s economy. As in much of Arkansas, cotton’s importance grew throughout the antebellum period, and slavery was common throughout the county.

In the 1830s, the Military Road was constructed along the Southwest Trail through Clark County and passed near Barkman’s home. This road became the county’s main land transportation artery. Today, U.S. 67 and Interstate 30 cross the Caddo River within a few hundred yards of Barkman’s former residence. U.S. 7 also traverses the county.

Among the county’s noted settlers was Meriwether Lewis Randolph, grandson of Thomas Jefferson. Randolph, Arkansas’s last territorial secretary, and his wife, a grandniece of Rachel Jackson (Andrew Jackson’s wife), moved to southern Clark County in 1836. After his death in 1837, Randolph was buried on the grounds of his plantation near Gurdon.

The early county seats were in or near the homes of Barkman on the Caddo and Adam Stroud near Hollywood. The county seat was also at Biscoeville. In 1831, the seat of government was established at Greenville, where it remained until 1842, when it moved to Blakelytown. Blakelytown was renamed Arkadelphia, and a courthouse was constructed. The present courthouse was built in 1899.

Churches and schools were priorities for early settlers. William Frederick Browning settled in northwest Clark County in 1841 near the present-day Amity and established a church and school by 1848. Oakland Academy opened in 1847 as a result of the effort of Michael Bozeman, who settled west of Arkadelphia in 1835 and began a large farming operation. His Greek Revival home is considered the county’s oldest residence. By 1859, three churches, the Arkansas Institute for the Blind, and several academies operated in Arkadelphia. Ouachita Baptist College (now Ouachita Baptist University) was founded in 1886, followed by Arkadelphia Methodist College (later Henderson-Brown College) in 1890. Today, public schools have been consolidated into three major districts—Arkadelphia, Gurdon, and Centerpoint—and Arkadelphia’s two universities make education an important component of the county. Arkadelphia has even been called “the Athens of Arkansas” because of the number and prominence of its educational institutions.

Religion played an important role in the lives of early Clark Countians, and they organized churches soon after settling. Dr. Willis S. Smith may have taught what was the county’s first Sunday school in Okolona in 1833. Mount Bethel Baptist Church, six miles west of Arkadelphia, was founded in 1836 and is one of the oldest Baptist churches in west Arkansas. Manchester Methodist Church was organized in the Manchester community in 1837, and the congregation built a church there in 1844. Members of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Whelen Springs first met in 1851. African Americans in the eastern part of the county began services at Mount Morriah Baptist Church in 1869. Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians all established congregations in Arkadelphia before the Civil War.

I'm interested in information about Edmiston Cemetery in Washington Co. Arkansas. My husbands g-g grandparents and great grandparents are buried there. (James Houston SHANNON Lucinda Edmiston SHANNON (I think) and Hollis Wilburn SHANNON and Malisa Bacon SHANNON )
Would be interested in knowing if there are more SHANNON family members buried there, and some dates of death that might be in the cemetery sextons records or in internment records.
Thanks in advance.

I have family on my mother's side in the Edmiston Cemetary. Me and my husband went to Washington county, Ar
(Morrow, Ar) just last week and visited. I found a book in the Fayetteville, Ar Public Library and copied the pages listing all that are burried there.
James H. Shannon jan 12, 1829 - Aug 1, 1864
Melissa Bacon Shannon, wife of Hollis Shannon 4/23/1854-3/10/1930
Hollas W. Shannon ae 33 yr 2 mo 21 days
does not list birthdate - 3/27/1887
My Great Great grandfather was Harvey Henderson Edmiston and he was the brother of Lucinda Etna who married James Houston Shannon and Malissa and Hollas were their children.
At the Fayetteville, Ar Public Library, they have a very good book on the Edmiston Family. That is where I have found this info.
There are alot of variations on Malissa(Melissa)'s name. I guess that she married a Hollis and her brother is a Hollas.
I hope this helps you, if I can be of any more help, please let me know. You can e-mail me at carijo@touchtoneproductions.com

Carol, I see you are descended from Harvey Henderson Edmiston. Have you ever solved the mystery of who his birth parents are? He of course was raised at some point in time by David Crawford and Rebecca (Thornton) Edmiston, who married in 1827. I have Harvey being born in 1817 but part of David and Rebecca's household. I've always been curious about this. David C. would have been 12 years of age when Harvey was born. Perhaps you have an explanation. I am a researcher of the descendants of James and Margaret Edmiston whose two sons David and Moses moved to Clark Co., AR around 1819. Then Moses and his family moved to Washington Co. in 1826 after which David's son David Crawford moved with his family from Clark to Washington in the early 1830s, along with his widowed mother Ann (Brevard), wife of David. David died in Clark Co. before 1824. I descend from Moses, but I have visited the Edmiston (David Crawford's descendants) Cemetery many times. His mother Ann is in the unmarked cript in the center of the cemetery, as you probably know.

"dorn" = "thorn"

"tun" = enclosure or fence = "zaun"

Last name: Thornton

This interesting surname is of Olde English and occasionally Scottish, pre 7th century origins. It is locational and northern, being from any of the several places called Thornton in counties of Lancashire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire, or from the lands of Thornton in the Mearns, Scotland. Wherever found the name derives from the words "thorn" meaning a thorn bush or hedge, and "tun", an enclosure or settlement. In this case the word "thorn" is believed to have defensive implications, thorn hedges being deliberately grown around fortified positions both to keep would be raiders out, and the owners cattle in. Locational names were frequently given to the local lord of the manor, as in the first recording below, but more usually were "from" names. That is to say names given to people after they left their original homes, to move elsewhere. Early interesting recordings suggest that the name was spelt Thorntowne in Scotland as late as the year 1609, and that a number of Scottish merchants of the name settled in the state of Prussia, the spelling being recorded there as Dornthon in 1644. Other recordings include Henry Thornton in the Freemans rolls of the city of Canterbury. Kent, in 1362, whilst three centuries later in April 1635, Walter Thornton and his wife, Joanna, left the port of London, England, on the ship "Suzan and Ellin" bound the colony of Virginia. They were amonst the first to settle in the new colony. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Beatrice de Thornton. This was dated 1202, in the "Fine Court Rolls" of the county of Yorkshire, during the reign of King John, known as "Lackland", 1199 - 1216.

A quick search for the origin of the surname THORNTON reveals that the name in Old English means “from a thorn bush enclosure or settlement.” Anglicized Irish forms of Gaelic surnames are derived from Mac Sceacháin ‘son of Sceachán’ (son of the Briar), or Ó Draighneáin ‘descendant of Draighneán’ (descendant of the Blackthorn). As surnames were adopted approximately 1,000 years ago individuals living in these thorn enclosed settlements adopted THORNTON as their surname (or similar variants). The Domesday Book of 1086 lists 24 places called Thornton. The General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales; A Registry of Armorial Bearing from the Earliest to the Present Time, by Sir Bernard Burke (1884) lists 36 THORNTON families as entitled to bear a Coat of Arms. Today, the THORNTON surname is widely distributed across the globe, all originating from the British Isles within the last millennium.
We now have a large number of THORNTON Surname DNA Project participants from the United States, a few participants from Canada, and we also have a few participants from the United Kingdom! The vast majority of participants (over 96%) fall into one of two genetic groupings (i.e., Haplogroups): either I1 (“eye-one”) or R1 (“are-one”). While there is a significant amount of genetic diversity (heterogeneity) in the R1 group, the I1 group is remarkably homogeneous (90% of the I1 participants are closely related). The THORNTON Surname DNA Project is now at a point where we almost have a critical mass to begin to deconstruct the various THORNTON lineages. In order to connect immigrants in the United States, Canada, and Australia, we will need more participants from the United Kingdom with documented pedigrees...and that's where YOU come in!

A Little Background on Our Project
The Thornton Surname DNA Project was started in June of 2003 by Stan Thornton. His stated goal at that time:
“…in order to see if DNA mapping of Thornton males combined with traditional genealogical research could help sort out the Thomas, Luke, and William Thorntons who seem to be everywhere you look in early Virginia records.”
Since its inception our numbers are closing-in on 100 participants, and we now have 5 different Haplogroups represented. The primary group representing the I1-Haplogroup is deemed “Virginia-A.” The R1-Haplogroup is represented by approximately 10 different subgroups; about one-third of the R1 folks have yet to be placed in a subgroup. In order to further group the R1 people we will need a wide range of Thorntons from across the UK to identify their respective origins.
The success of our THORNTON Surname DNA Project will depend on the number of participants who join our project, as well as the documentation (dates and locations of baptisms, burials, marriages, census & land records, wills, etc.) to connect individuals within each group.

The Thornton Clan

Clan History...

The name Thornton in Ireland is usually of Anglo origin having been brought to the country by settlers in the seventeenth century. Some native Gaelic Septs adopted it as the anglicized version of their Gaelic name however. These include the O'Draighnean Sept of County Galway whose Gaelic name is derived from a word meaning 'blackthorn'.

http://www.irishgathering.ie/clan_info.asp?clanID=1087

The surname of THORNTON was a locational name 'of Thornton' near Bradford, County York. Also parishes in the diocese of Lincoln, Oxford, Chester and Canterbury. Local names usually denoted where a man held his land, and indicated where he actually lived. Early records of the name mention Beatrice de Thornton, 1202 Yorkshire. Hugh de Thornton, was documented in 1202 in the County of Yorkshire. Richard de Thornton of Yorkshire was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Originally the coat of arms identified the wearer, either in battle or in tournaments. Completely covered in body and facial armour the knight could be spotted and known by the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped garment which enveloped him. Between the 11th and 15th centuries it became customary for surnames to be assumed in Europe, but were not commonplace in England or Scotland before the Norman Conquest of 1066. They are to be found in the Domesday Book of 1086. Those of gentler blood assumed surnames at this time, but it was not until the reign of Edward II (1307-1327) that second names became general practice for all people. In many parts of central and western Europe, hereditary surnames began to become fixed at around the 12th century, and have developed and changed slowly over the years. As society became more complex, and such matters as the management of tenure, and in particular the collection of taxes were delegated to special functionaries, it became imperative to distinguish a more complex system of nomenclature to differentiate one individual from another. The Old English word TORN, was undoubtably brought into England in the wake of the Norman Invasion of 1066, and the earliest of the name recorded is TORN (without surname) who was listed in the Domesday Book of 1066. The name literally meant the dweller at the thorn-bushes, from residence nearby. The first element of THORN was a very common medieval name.

I am interested in finding out the origin of the surname Thornton. So far,
I have a small amount of information going back to William Thornton of
East Newton, York, England about 1300's. Does anyone have information on
this surname?
Thanks, Anne Hamlin

Thornton Hunt Inn

http://www.thorntonhuntinn.co.uk/peter/

The Thornton Hunt Inn is a traditional Freehouse set in an attractive grade II listed building (listed in 1985), which dates back to around the Eighteenth Century. It has been said that King Henry the Eighth stayed on this site while visiting Thornton Abbey. The Inn is situated in the quaint village of Thornton Curtis on the A1077, approx. 18 miles from Scunthorpe, 5 miles from Barton-upon-Humber (and the Humber Bridge), 4 miles south of New Holland and 19 miles from Grimsby, and lies in the heart of the glorious North Lincolnshire countryside (national grid reference is TA087178). The parish covers over 4,900 acres and includes the hamlet of Burnham, 2 miles west of the village.

The Abbey of St. Mary, also known as Thornton Abbey, sits just east of the village. The Abbey was founded in 1139 by Wlliams le Gros, Earl of Yorkshire and reached status of Abbey in 1148. It was seized by the crown in the Dissolution of 1541. It is now an English Heritage site.

Our village Anglican parish church is dedicated to St. Lawrence and seats around 300 people. The church is built of stone in the 13th century in the early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and containing 5 bells. Inside there are lively stiff-leaf capitals and dog tooth decorations on the south door. The Early Norman black marble Tourrai font is square in plan, the bowl is curiously carved, resting on a large central shaft, with a smaller one at each angle, the whole surface is enriched with sculpture in low relief and is one of few in England. The church was restored in 1883/84 and additional work was carried out in 2009/10. A clock was added to the tower in 1901. The Anglican Parish register dates from the year 1568.

The name "Thornton" is from the Old English "thorn+tun" meaning "the farmstead or village where thorn trees grow". The origin of the "Curtis" part of the village name is unknown. In the "1086 Domesday Book" the name is rendered as "Torentune".

A Public Elementary School was built in 1873 to hold around 100 children. A new wing was added in 1904. Both buildings are now residential properties.

Thornton Curtis Local History Pack

http://www.northlincs.gov.uk/NorthLincs/Leisure/libraries/localstudies/localhistorypacks/ThorntonCurtis.htm

The name

Thornton Curtis was known as Torentune in 1086 at the time of the Doomsday Book. Cameron states that the origin of Curtis within the village's name is unknown but that the Thornton section means 'the farmstead or village where thorn trees grow'.

More information can be found in:

  • Cameron, Keith. The Place-Names of Lincolnshire.

  • Mills, A.D. A Dictionary of English Place Names.

The place

The village of Thornton Curtis lies five miles south east of Barton and four miles south of New Holland. Just east of the village lie the ruins of the Abbey of St Mary, known as Thornton Abbey. Founded in 1139 by William le Gros, the Earl of Yorkshire, and raised to the status of Abbey in 1148 it was a house for Augustinian or black canons. These priests lived a communal life under the Rule of St Augustine but also undertook pastoral duties outside of the Abbey. Officers within the Abbey besides the abbot and prior included a cellarer, bursar, chamberlain, sacrist, kitchener and an infirmer.

Thornton was a wealthy and prestigious house valued at the dissolution at the considerable sum of £591 0s 2 ¾ d. since the dissolution the site has been owned by Henry Randes (the Bishop of Lincoln), Sir Robert Tyrwhitt of Kettleby, Sir Vincent Skinner of Westminster, Sir Robert Sutton, George Appleby and in 1816 Charles, the first Lord Yarborough. In 1938 the fifth earl handed the care of the Abbey remains to HM Office of Works. The site is currently in the care of English Heritage.

The register dates from the year 1568. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £152, including 108 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord St. Oswald, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Charles Bailey Goodacre B.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1850. About a mile and a half east of the village are the ruins of the Abbey of St. Mary, founded by William-le-Gros, Earl of Albemarle, on the festival of St. Hilary, January 13, A.D. 1139, and in the following year, on the same day of the same festival, the founder brought hither an establishment of twelve Augustinian, or Black Canons, from Kirkham Priory; one of the number being then constituted prior: in 1148 the monastery was raised by Pope Eugenius III to abbatial rank, and in 1517 became a mitred abbey: in 1541 it was dissolved and refounded by Henry VIII as a college for a dean and twenty prebendaries, in honour of the Holy Trinity; it was visited by the king in person in the same year, when he stayed several days: this new foundation, however, lasted only till 1547, when the site was granted to Henry Holbeach, Bishop of Lincoln, the clear yearly income being estimated at £594: the remains of the Abbey church are insignificant, the only existing portions being the end of the south transept and a fragment of the adjoining chapter house: within the area of the nave and the north transept are a number of stone coffins and incised slabs, and outside the east wall of the choir a slab with a very rich cross and marginal inscription to John Girdyk, 1363, and Johan, his wife: the ruins are generally of the Early Decorated period, the chapter house dating from 1282-1308, choir 1315, and the presbytery 1443-73: the remains of the Abbot's house is now a farm: the entrance gatehouse is one of the finest existing specimens in England of the Early Perpendicular style, and was built about 1382, the general plan being that of a parallelogram of two storeys, with octagonal towers at the angles and on either side of the entrance; the front is enriched with several canopied niches, from some of which the figures have disappeared; the three largest, however, remain, and are in a perfect state, the centre figure representing the Virgin Mary, to whom the abbey was dedicated, and over her head may be discerned a very rare and remarkable representation of the Holy Trinity; the Father is crowned, and holds in his hand the orb, the emblem of kingly power; the Son wears the crown of thorns, and they are both in the act of sending down the Holy ghost, in the form of a dove, upon the Blessed Virgin; to the left of the Virgin is the figure of an abbot holding a book and a pastoral staff; the figure to the right of the Virgin probably represents William-le-Gros, the founder: the roof of the gateway is handsomely groined, and there are some remains of the original oaken doors: the second storey is reached by a winding newel staircase, which has an elegant stone roof, with eight cusped ribs springing from corbels and meeting in the centre: the whole area of the abbey, surrounded by a wall and moat, was 100 acres. The principal landowners are the Earl of Yarborough P.C. the representatives of the late John Ferraby esq. and William Maw esq. The soil is light loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes. The population in 1891, including the hamlet of Burnham, 2 miles west, was 489. The area is 4,932 acres; rateable value, £6,332.

st. lawrence's church, thornton curtis

http://www.churchtrails.com/barton-area/thornton-curtis/

Thornton Curtis was known as Torentune in 1086 at the time of the Domesday Book. The origin of Curtis within the village's name is unknown but Thornton means 'the farmstead or village where thorn trees grow'.

interior of st. lawrence's church, thornton curtisStanding proudly on the main road through the village, holding a commanding position within this small community, is St Lawrence's church. It is mentioned in Pevsner's 'Buildings of England' and referred to as a 'memorable building'; it is indeed one of North Lincolnshire's greatest ecclesiastical treasures, an architectural gem enhanced by a splendid collection of church furniture.

We know very little of the church's origins and early history but it is likely that there was a pre-Conquest Christian building in the village, a chapel-of-ease.The church today is a stone building in the early English style, consisting of a chancel, nave, aisles and a south porch. The embattled western tower has eight pinnacles and contains 5 bells. John Harrison (1693-1776), the self-educated English clockmaker who invented the marine chronometer, was from nearby Barrow upon Humber and mended the church bells in his youth.

Rubbing from Thornton Font

One of the greatest treasures within the church is the font which has been recently restored with funding from English Heritage. It was carved during the 12th century from black Tournai "marble" and another example can be found in Lincoln Cathedral.

The church houses a steam clock and inside the clock’s cupboard examples of graffiti dating from 1881 can be found.

At the northern entrance to the church is a Norman doorway which has a chimney attached to it. This unusual feature can also be seen surrounding a doorway at the Jew's House in Lincoln.

The aisle has impressive buttresses with niches and built into these are numerous 13th century grave slabs. These would have been collected from the church's cemetery and used instead of stone, reducing the rebuilding costs.

thornton abbey gatehouse

Just east of the village of Thornton Curtis lies the ruins of the Abbey of St. Mary, known as Thornton Abbey. Built following the Peasant's Revolt of 1381, Thornton Abbey was proclaimed as one of the wealthiest English Augustinian monasteries of its day. The ornate fortified gatehouse is among the finest surviving in Britain today. Within the main grounds are the remains of the monastic buildings, featuring the elegantly decorated chapter house.

The visitor centre houses an exciting exhibition that relives the abbey's history from its foundation to the present day. The haunting passageways and hidden alleys of the gatehouse allow you to discover the hands on displays in what once would have been a meeting place for the monks. The abbey grounds are also a haven for wildlife and the ideal place to get away from it all.

Thornton Abbey is now in the care of English Heritage.

The name ‘Thornton’ is of English and Scottish origin. It is derived from the habitational name from any of the numerous places throughout England and Scotland, so called from the Old English word ‘porn’ meaning thorn bush, and ‘tun’ meaning enclosure, settlement. In Ireland it has been translated in to the Gaelic form ‘Mac Sceachain’ meaning ‘son of Sceachan’, a personal name from a diminutive of ‘sceach’ meaning thorn bush. Compiled information from Historical and Private archive’s has confirmed that the surname ‘Thornton’ and or it’s variant’s, dates as far back as the 13th century were a ‘Roger de Thorntone’, from the city of Cambridgeshire, England, is recorded on the Hundred Rolls in 1273. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definately determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive’s confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain ‘John Thornton’, aged 30, a pewterer by trade, from the city of London, England. He emigrated to North America in 1774, sailing from the Port of London aboard the ship named the ‘Catharine’ on the 14th of November 1774, arriving in Philadelphia on the 21st of November of the same, where he served as indentured servant to a Mr.James Barren. Today, ‘Thornton’ is the ’324th’ most common surname in North America.

Researching my husband's family. All I know is that they came from Ireland, lived in Indiana for a time.

His gr-gr grandfather's name was John and his gr-grandfather was Eugene. They lived in western Iowa.

Eugene supposedly had a brother who was a piano player in a saloon in western Nebraska and was shot

while playing the piano. The first Thorntons arrived in Ireland in 1562 after receiving a land grant from Queen Elizabeth I.

Before that were in Yorkshire area of England after arriving from Normandy.

I don't believe that this Thornton line is related to ours.

However, the historical note regarding emigration to Yorkshire

from Normandy and then to Ireland and then to America is quite interesting and may have some relevance.

Also, interesting story regarding the piano player!
