Maifest

Once again, Maifest at the Carpathia Club was a great time. Unfortunately the economy took its toll on attendance but those that did make it had a wonderful time. Guests were treated to a delicious chicken schnitzel and Sarma dinner. After dinner, guests were entertained by the Carpathia dance groups and to the music of the Deutsche Musik Verein, a 30 piece Blaskapelle from Cleveland, Ohio. The Carpathia Jugendgruppe performed several new dances including one called the Boom Polka in which group leader, Rob Schwalbe, entertained the crowd with a skit routine while banging on a drum.

Several members of the Jugendgruppe and Kulturgruppe put on a Schuhplatter performance as well.

Tombala in LA

Do you know what the German translation is for "Re-Gifting"?

 It's called Tombala!

Yes, it's that time again when the LA Dance Group

hosts the Tombala Gift Booth at this year's

Tag der Donauschwaben

at the Phoenix Club on July 26th.

The Tombala is for the benefit of the children.

If you happen to have a gift that you'd like to donate, please drop it off at the Tombala Booth.

Oh, I've just been informed that Arnold will be bringing Maria and they have agreed to be in the booth for most of the day.

Although it won't be possible to get their autographs, you will have an opportunity to have your picture taken with them!

2009 Danube Swabian Day in Cleveland

by Karoline Lindenmaier (Hetzel)

Since 1960 Danube Swabian Day has been celebrated on the second Sunday in June.  On the 14th of June, 2009 members and friends of our club gathered together to celebrate the annual festival.  Beginning at 12 Noon you could partake of the delicious food prepared by Chef Steve Weiss and crew.

Once again you could feast on Rindergulasch or Danube Swabian bratwurst with sauerkraut.  Equally tasty was the freshly baked Krapfen for dessert.

The Ladies Auxiliary, under the leadership of Helga Schlothauer, kept busy with the food distribution and were always ready to clean up after the program.

The Danube Swabian Blaskapelle took their places punctually on stage.  The group was lead by its president, Roger Radke, and accompanied by soloist Michelle Esper.

Around 2 PM the various groups were asked to assemble in the Pavilion and to gather around the monument.  They were accompanied by flag bearers and the Executive Committee.  A short commerative ceremony took place.  President Franz Rimpf addressed the group in memory of those who have passed on.  Hilde Hornung recited a poem and Pastor Horst Hoyer, of the Protestant Immanuel Church, led the group in prayer.

The Banater Choir, under the direction of Cindy Cornett and soloist Andrea Ball, sang ‚“ So nimm den meine Hände“.  The Ladies Auxliliary sang „Donauschwaben werden wir genannt“ along with the Youth Group.  During the singing of „Ich hatt einen Kameraden„ the Youth Group placed a wreath and flowers around the monument.

Afterwards, the festivities continued in Holzerhalle in the German-American Cultural Center of the Danube Swabians.  Hilde Hornung, cultural coordinator of the Danube Swabian Association, USA, and Indrid Dorr, first Vice-President of the Club and National Pouth Leader of the Danube Swabian Association, USA, led the program.  Hymns were sung and president Rimpf addressed the attendees.  Guests and Honorary Guests were introduced.  These included Mrs.Diana Thimmig, Consulate from the Bundesrepublick of Germany, and Keynote Speaker, Mr. Ed Tullius, President of the Danube Swabian Foundation, USA and his wife, who had traveled from Cincinnati, Ohio for this event.

Richard Welker, President of the Concordia Sport Club, was also introduced.   He proudly showed the trophy, which had been won by his team at the National Danube Swabian Soccer Tournament several weeks earlier.

Ingrid Dorr read a greeting from Robert Filippi, who has been recently elected as the new President of the Danube Swabian Assoication of the USA.  He and his wife, Elisabeth are presently on a European trip.

This was followed by a short presentation of the German Language School operations.

Mr Ed Tullius mentioned in his speech that he was honored to be able to deliver a commemorative address on the Day of the Danube Swabians.  He explained that he explored the Internet to help find facts regarding the event.  He was surprised to find that this particular Event, whether in Los Angeles or across the USA, Canada, Europe, South America, and Australia, is celebrated at different times.  „Everywhere the Danube Swabians have settled, they maintain their heritage.“  He them explained the duties and goals of the Danube Swabian Foundation, USA, along with its support for the German language schools, youth and children groups, and sports associations of the Danube Swabians.  He was very grateful that our Cleveland Club had held a raffle, whose proceeds would benefit the Foundation.  He also stated it would be nice if our countrymen would remember the Foundation in their final wishes.

The Banater Choir sang a final two songs.  The Children’s Dance group, under the direction of Ingrid Dorr, danced their way into the hearts of the spectators.  The Youth Group, under the direction of Margot Mauer and Mrs. Erika Rounds, impressed the crowd with their folk dancing and their sheer numbers.  Neverending applause rewarded the smiling faces of the youth, our future!

Finally, a raffle was held and several happy winners gratefully accepted their gift baskets.  While the Blaskapella played everyone relaxed together.  As one says, „So jung kumme mir nimmer zamm!“

The Schwaben Dancers: Busy Fundraising

    Schlachtfest 2009

Forwarded From Kitchener Donauschwaben

The Schwaben Dancers are focused on going to Germany next year, and will be working hard to raise money throughout this year.

Schlactfest was a great event this month. The Schwaben Dancers preformed four dances, and had some new members of the group performing dances for the first time. Great job to all of our dancers! Part of our fundraising at Schlactfest included raffling off meat that was donated to our dance group by Pillers. It was a very successful night.  A big Thank you goes out to Pillers for your wonderful donation of meat.

Thank you as well to everyone that contributed to the raffle.

German Clubs Sponsoring Euro Car Show

Two German clubs, the German American Society and the Danube Swabian Association will co-sponsor the fifth annual “Euro American Auto Show” scheduled for Saturday, July 11 at the German American Picnic Grove.

The car show is expected to feature a variety of American classics from the Model T to the T-bird, along with a mix of vehicles from famous manufacturers like Lamborghini and Porsche and the iconic VW Bug. Hundreds of cars have been on display in years past, and awards are given to the Top 50 vehicles as judged by the show’s panel.

Registration (day of show only) is $15.

Cars must be street driven.

The clubs provide volunteers of every age group to organize and staff the auto show. There will be German food, music and kids’ activities. A portion of the proceeds will go to language scholarships offered by both clubs.

The Danube Swabian Association has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarship money in the past three years to German language from the three Hamilton high schools.

The event will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The “downpour date” is July 12. The German American Club is located at 215 Uncle Pete’s Road in Yardville.

Wallfahrt 2009

Forwarded From Trenton Donauschwaben

Sunday, June 7th, 2009 10:15AM

As it has done for the last two decades and more, our sister club in Philadelphia has organized Donauschwaben from across the region and of every religious denomination to gather at St. Peter’s Church in the City of Brotherly Love. There, the faithful commemorate the tragic events of 1944 – 49 through song, ritual and prayer. Our own club plays an active role in the proceedings, providing the trademark white crosses, a considerable number of participants and even the young ladies dressed in the white ethnic costume who carry the statue of Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

As the resting place for St. Johannes Neumann, a German-American saint, the church is a pilgrimage destination for countless thousands. The location serves as a most appropriate venue for our memorial service. Indeed the incredibly beautiful church and presence of the shrine to the saint seems to enhance the solemnity and importance of our undertaking each year without fail.

Many thanks to the driving force behind this year’s and every year’s Wallfahrt, Frau Käthe Marx, as well as to our sister club, the Philadelphia Donauschwaben.
