Donauschwaben Soccer Tournament

Carpathia Donauschwaben

by Kurt Seiberling

This past Memorial weekend the Carpathia Club hosted the 35th Annual Donauschwaben Tournament. Planning for the tournament started in mid December. The club wanted to make sure that everything was in place so that everyone would have a good time. A week before the Tournament it did not look like we were going to be able to play any games on our field, as the field was under water due to all the rain we had in May. It was one of the most severe floods that we have ever had. We were pumping water off the field for a solid week. Some people were there ten to twelve hours a day getting the club and field ready. (Lucky for us that some of members were laid off at the time, they have since returned to work). By Friday, the field was ready to be played on.

This year’s tournament saw the return of our good friends LA Danubia. It is always good to see them on the field, as well as off the field. We seem to pack two weeks worth of fun into 3 days and this year was no exception.

This year's tournament had the Kickers enter 5 teams. The 1st team opened play against Milwaukee, beating them by 2-0. That afternoon they went up against Philadelphia Danubia beating them by the same 2-0 score. The 1st team started Sunday with a tie against Chicago Green /White. The 2nd game saw them get their offense back on track against a young Windsor team beating them by 3-0. With a record of 3-0-1 it was good enough to put them thru to the final. The final game saw them pitted against our old nemesis Cleveland Concordia. The Kickers had a couple of early chances but saw both shots from close range sail over the net. The second half was a chess match between the two teams. Late in the 2nd half Cleveland broke the deadlock on a miscue by a Kickers defender. Cleveland went on the defensive and held onto the lead for a 1-0 win and their 6th Donauschwaben Championship.

The Reserve Team played Cleveland in their 1st game losing 3-0, in their 2nd game they lost to Akron by the score of 2-0. Sunday the |Reserve Team fared a bit better beating Windsor 2-1, before losing to Chicago 2-1. Their tournament was over with a 1-3 record.

The Women’s Open Division saw the Carpathia Women’s team do very well in this year’s tournament. They finished with a 3-1 record with their only loss coming at the hands of eventual champions,  Mansfield Liederkranz . The 3 wins were good enough to give them a 2nd place finish. This year the Kickers entered two 0-35 teams in the tournament.

The O-35-A won the championship finishing the tournament undefeated with record of 4-0. The O -35 B also went undefeated finishing with a 3-0-1 capturing the 2nd place trophy.

I would like to congratulate all of our teams for an excellent showing at this year’s tournament on and off the field. I would also like to thank all of the committee members for the seven months of hard work it was greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank all of the volunteers that helped during the weekend we could not have done it without you.

United German Hungarians

Under 17 Boys

Win MAPS/MSSL Tournament

Forwarded From UGH

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, June 19, 20, 21

We are very proud of our accomplishments and glad to be champions of the tournament. We played three very competitive teams that we have not played before and represented our club well. The club, the coaches, the players and parents are all very happy.

Coming into the tournament, we were excited because we had a chance to play Copa and a lot of the players know each other and we have not played them. We heard Ocean United had been playing very well and if we could win the group we could potentially play YMS XPlosion who we have never played.

There were many memorable plays this weekend. Our goaltender, Calvin Young, played really well in the first half against Copa and the crossbar helped us out more than once. Justin Massaro scored a goal in the second half against Ocean to make it 2 - 0 while Ocean was putting a lot of pressure on us. Andrew Weyershaeuser scored the only goal in the YMS game and Calvin Young, again, played extremely well. The defense played well all weekend and did not give up a goal. It was a total team effort for us and that's what it takes for us to win.

We are busy with tournaments this summer as most U-17 teams are. Most of our players play in high school as well, but we always consider all the MAPS/MSSL tournaments and showcases because your staff does such a good job and we have always had a good experience.

     CHICAGO KICKERS

WIN US CLUB SOCCER STATE CUP!

Forwarded From American Aid Society of German Descendants

The Chicago Kickers U17 red team played for the NISL US Club Soccer State Championship on Monday, June 15th in Schaumburg, Illinois. The Kickers showed their heart and determination and prevailed 4-2 to win the state title and advance to the Regional National Cup VIII in Indianapolis, Indiana the weekend of June 27th. The Kickers swept through their preliminary round and playoffs without a loss. The championship game saw three lead changes. The Kickers scored in the first minute on a goal from Gilberto Alfaro. South Suburban converted a penalty kick to tie the game and later scored to take the lead 2-1. The Kickers tied the game before halftime on a goal from Oscar Segura. In the second half, Justin Georg scored for a 3-2 lead. And Stephen Korosis scored a late goal to secure the victory and the championship. There were many club members at the game to support our team. The U17 red team would like to thank all our club members and families for their support.

The U17 red team has been very busy this year. The boys took 1st place in our winter indoor league at Libertyville with an undefeated record of 11-0. The spring league season started March 28th and they finished one point short of 1st place in the Premiership 2 Division with a record of 6-1. They took 1st place at the Barrington indoor tournament in April. They finished 2nd place at the NSR Midwest Cup in Naperville over the Memorial Day Weekend. And just recently, they played for the championship of the UW Parkside Tournament that was rescheduled at our club fields and took 1st place with a 3-1 victory.

The team traveled north the weekend of June 20th to visit our old friends the Bavarian’s for a U18 tournament in Milwaukee. They went 1-1-1. Dave Adkisson and the Chicago Fire’s Nick Noble will train the boys in preparation for our trip to Indianapolis for the Regional National Cup VIII. Should the Kickers win the Regional event, they will advance to the National Tournament in Virginia Beach, VA in July.

In August, the boys hope to be accepted in the College Search Kickoff in Muscatine, Iowa.
