Kickers Win Portage Tournament
by
Shelly Watkins
|
The Carpathia Kickers U13 girls team just put an
exclamation point on their undefeated spring
season.
This
weekend, the girls claimed the championship at the
Portage Classic Tournament in Portage, Michigan,
going 4-0 and winning the final game in a dramatic
penalty kick shootout. Winning the tournament was
a big feat for the team, as they’ve played seven
games in seven days.
The
Kickers defeated TKO 3-0 and Kalamazoo Crew 7-0 on
Saturday, then CATS from Grand Rapids 4-1 Sunday
morning before advancing to the finals. Against
Michigan Alliance in the championship, the match
was scoreless after regulation and two five minute
overtime bouts.
In
the PK finale, the Kickers outscored the Alliance
3-1 and helped themselves to first place trophies,
hugs and high fives and Creamstone Creamery ice
cream before the 3-hour drive home.
“I’m
very proud of the girls,” Carpathia Kickers head
coach Stefano Moraccini said. “They should be
proud too. There is one word that I’ve been
preaching the girls all season and that is
‘united’.” I tell them we go into a game
united, we stay united, we play united. They have
worked hard together and are learning to
communicate more effectively and more
positively.”
Being
united has worked for the Kickers and it all
started back in November.
After
a tough fall season, the team completed a winter
of strong Saturday soccer. They went 19-1 indoor
at Ultimate and 8-0 on the 8v8 field at Liberty
Park against U14 teams.
The
Kickers took that momentum outside this spring and
went 8-0 in league play and 2-1 in their state cup
run. Their only loss was to the eventual state cup
winners, Hawks.

U11
’00 Boys Premier Take First Place in Nike
Challenge Cup
|
On May 1, 2011 the Carpathia Kickers U11 Boys were
crowned Champions at the Nike Challenge Cup in
Dublin, OH. The weather was dreary, but confidence
was high as the Kickers team had won this very
tournament in 2010. On the road to the finale
Carpathia’s boys defeated teams from Bowling
Green, KY, Beaver Creek, OH and Pittsburgh, PA. In
the preliminary matches they managed to score a
division leading 18 goals while surrendering only
3.
The
Kickers showed true character in the final match
coming back from a 1-0 half time deficit. Their
opponents, the Wolves of Livonia, MI carried most
of the play during the first half. The coaching
staff made some positional changes and fired up
the team with great success as the Carpathia squad
dominated possession and field position for the
remainder of the match. Tension was still very
high as the match was tied 1-1 at the end of
regulation. After two 10 minute overtime sessions
the match was still tied sending the two teams
into a shootout. The Carpathia field players made
4 of their 5 shots. The Kickers’ goalie made in
incredible save giving the team enough confidence
to go on to their 2nd consecutive
Tournament Championship.
Coach
Brian Birdsall commented saying “this was the
most stressful match I’ve ever coached.” No
doubt it was also one of the most rewarding. The
team demonstrated their brilliant potential in the
preliminary matches. They also showed perseverance
battling through the conditions and a number of
injuries during the final. Michigan can be proud
having two teams in the final that played with
such heart and dignity.

her time and efforts.

U.S.
NATIONAL DONAUSCHWABEN TOURNAMENT
GW
TAKES SECOND (AGAIN) AT USNDT
The 37th Annual U.S. National Donauschwaben
Tournament was held over the Memorial Day weekend just
outside of Philadelphia, PA. The tournament features
competition between Donauschwaben clubs from all over the
nation. This year the tournament was hosted by the United
German Hungarian Club at their facilities in Oakford, PA and
included reigning champions Cleveland Concordia (who bested
Green White 1-0 in last year’s final), Detroit Carpathia,
Akron GFS, Mansfield Liederkranz, Philadelphia Danubia, and
Windsor Teutonia, SC.
Traveling this year to the east coast to represent
the club were Coach Jake Truty, Jimmy Romano, AJ Nawrocki,
Tim Weir, Matt Connor, Ivo Gunchev, Jason Okroy, Sean
Connor, Anthony DeRose, Eric Spiess, Stefan Zlatev, Monroe
Bell, Art Rosiles, Taylor Bond, Nate Downing and Jose
Cornejo.
Green White opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw
against Windsor Teutonia, SC. Eric Spiess was thought to
have grabbed the later winner for Green White, but the side
gave up the equalizer off a corner kick near the end of time
and had to settle for a share of the spoils. In their second
outing, GW bested Philadelphia Danubia 3-1 behind two goals
from Taylor Bond and another from Sean Connor. On day two,
GW faced down Detroit Carpathia in a goal-less draw in the
morning match to set the stage for a dramatic finish in the
final match of group play. With GW sitting on five (5)
points and a +2 goal differential from an unbeaten record of
1-0-2, Detroit was close on their heels, also with five (5)
points, but a only a +1 goal differential. In order to
advance to the final from Group B, Green White needed a
result in their cross-over match against Mansfield
Liederkranz, while Detroit could only hope that GW would
stumble to allow them through. But GW was not in a
charitable mood and put the hammer to Mansfield behind two
goals from Ivo Gunchev; one from the penalty spot and on
another served to the near post by Sean Connor. Taylor Bond
added his third of the tournament and Tim Weir netted the 5th
on a diagonal through ball. (Nobody could remember who
scored the other goal). In the end, the 5-0 victory gave
Green White eight (8) points and a +7 goal differential,
which was more than enough to send Green White to their
second final in as many years. The final pitted Green White
against the hosts, Philadelphia UGH, who survived Group A
ahead of two-time, defending champions, Cleveland Concordia
on the third tie breaker. Both teams finished the group on
seven (7) points and a +6 goal differential, but UGH went
through with more goals scored. The final was a tight affair
and UGH thought they were on top within a minute of the
opening whistle, but the goal was called back for off-sides.
Late in the first half, Taylor Bond was taken down
aggressively in the box but the referee figured no blood, no
foul and allowed play to continue.
While UGH had the majority of the possession in
the first half, after the break, the game turned into a wide
open affair with many opportunities for both sides.
Ultimately, the cumulative effect of several games over two
days began to catch up with Green White. Matt Connor
suffered a hamstring injury on Saturday and did not play,
while Nate Downing and Eric Spiess had to retire from the
final with leg cramps. In the end, with time waning, the
referee whistled Monroe Bell for a shoulder challenge that
gave UGH a free kick from only 22 yards out. The free kick
was a stunning, rocket of a shot, two feet off the ground
that allowed Jose Cornejo no chance. In the remaining six
minutes, UGH camped in their own half and GW could not get
near the goal. It was a good game and unlucky for Green
White who finished runner-up for the second year in a row.
In the Men’s O35 Division, Windsor Teutonia SC beat
Detroit Carpathia 1- 0 to claim the alte herren trophy while
the Detroit women beat Philadelphia UGH by the same
scoreline to win the women’s division.

U14
Girls win Premier..
Winning the premier league was spectacular
after joining it for the first time this
year. After the top showing in the state
cup tournament the team received an invite
to the Midwest Regional League but had to
finish strong which they accomplished.
"In a 3 game stretch, every player
has the ability to start a game. We have
been down at halftime most of the season,
as we have played outstanding opponents.
The difference is that we are never
satisfied with an outcome. The only thing
that stops our forward progress is the
final whistle! We are always pushing
forward, with a physical, direct-style of
play" said Schmidt.

MSC
U14 advance in Wisconsin State Cup....
WFB took a 3-1 lead late into the second
half when the MSC U14 girls turned it on
and scored 3 goals to win 4-3 to tally 4
points in the tournament and setting up a
thrilling preliminary round game on Monday
with Brookfield Red who won their second
in a row for 6 points.
The Memorial Day match came down to a must
win scenario for MSC U14 girls who were up
to the task. The game against Brookfield
included one goal for MSC in the first
half and a 1-0 lead that held for the
entire game despite many very close shots
on goal, breakaways and tough defense for
both teams. A final sure to be remembered
by the MSC faithful. MSC U14 girls
now head to Fond du Lac for the semifinals
on June 4th against Lake Country United
with the finals on Sunday June 5th.
Good
luck MSC!

The German Hungarians kicked off game play of the
tournament, on Saturday at 11:00 am, on the major’s field
against Akron GFS. The final score was GH 3, Akron 1. Goals
were scored in the 3’ by Nick Dundon, in the 17’ by Tony
Rod, and in the 45’ by Timmy O’Neill. After winning our
first game the team lunched together, and rested until our
second game. In our second game we were matched up against
the Mansfield Liederkranz, and the final was 5- 1 GH. Goals
were scored in the 6’, 15’, & 39’ by Andy Meehan,
in the 21’ by Ken Tomczuk, and in the 41’ by Tony Rod.
In the evening the team ate dinner together and enjoyed the
camaraderie and fun of the night, but not too much seeing
that we had at least 2 games to play on Sunday. (It turned
out we would play three) At 11:00 am on Sunday, GH tied
against Cleveland 0-0, and at 3:00 pm GH tied Windsor 0-0.
After the game against Windsor, a lot of our players and
SuperFans were getting nervous. We had made it to the final
without scoring any goals on Sunday!
The final began as a fast paced game against Chicago Grün
Weiss. Both teams played exceptionally well even after
playing four games in one weekend. The game went scoreless
for the entire 1st half and most of the 2nd. A free kick for
GH was called and in the 46’ Roman Escobar scored the game
winning and only goal of the match. With the SuperFans in an
almost continuous cheer, Jakob, and Evan Hubert, Kyra
Malofiy and Avery Papendick appeared on the hill with a club
flag and cheered on “UGH” At the End of the game after
saying good game to Chicago, The entire team and staff went
over to the consultant’s corner to thank our SuperFans. GH
received the traveling championship trophy as well as the
one we get to keep from Mike Talan. Captain Jason Karasow
spoke, about how we haven’t won this in 21 years, and once
again thanked all the supporters and club members alike.

On Friday evening, as the German Hungarians made
last minute preparations for the tournament, the
first teams started to arrive from their long
flights and drives to Philadelphia. The first to
arrive, were a few players from Chicago Grün
Weiss, and they settled right in our bar and had a
little taste of Philadelphia, when they were
served cheese steaks made by our own Reiter and
Rolf’s German Hungarian Cheese Steaks, located
at 4666C Bristol Road! Soon after, the Carpathia
Kickers rolled in on their bus, and that’s when
the singing started. Overall Friday was a somewhat
quiet night. With the thoughts of soccer the next
day, the teams headed back to their hotels to rest
and prepare for a day of great Schwowe soccer on
Saturday.

traditions that the tournament continues.
“Around here we like to say ‘Continuing a
Proud Tradition’, and that’s what this
tournament is about continuing a proud tradition
of German-Hungarian, Donauschwaben Soccer,”
